Suggested tipping on Celebrity Cruise to Alaska
My family and I will be taking a 7-day round-trip Inside Passage cruise to Alaska out of Vancouver in June.
For you experienced cruise travelers, would you mind sharing your experiences regarding tipping. My specific questions are:
1. How do you tip (daily, at end of week), and to whom?
2. Is it preferable to pay the staff in cash...or charge your account?
3. Do we leave a tip when we dine at the restaurant that will charge us an extra fee?
3. How exactly does this tipping system work?
Thank you for your help,
Terry

You have a choice to tip with "cash" on the last night of the cruise, or you can pay on your "account". You will receive a form for auto tipping a few days into the cruise. Just fill it out and give it to your cabin steward or the front desk. It really doesn't matter to the staff whether it's cash or charge. Your auto tipping will cover everyone, including your dining room staff. The only "extra" tipping is at the specialty restaurant, which is also added to your account. You only need cash if you're in the casino. Optional things like room service, I give a few dollars if used. If you do the optional shore excursions, cash tipping is generally expected for the tour guides. Hope this helps.

Oops, in my original post, I forgot to ask just how much people generally tip per day to which staff...thank you for that additional and important information!
Also, what percentage of tip is customary to give to the shore excursions tour guides? For instance, our helicopter ride costs $370 pp and float plane ride costs $243 pp...and we are a party of four. Thanks for help with this information as well.

Tips can be added to your shipaccount, so you pay it all before leaving the ship.
In general will be $ 10.-- per person per day. If your have exeptional good or special service tips extra to that person.
Drinks will be charged with 15% service charge each time.

The rule of thumb for many other cruise lines is to add $10.00 pp daily for tips. This is added to a general fund for the stewards, waiters, etc. I leave more anyway, esp. if the service has been good.

On RCI you tip individually with envelopes on the last night of the cruise. I forget the breakout. Is it still $3.50 per day per room steward, and dining room waiter with $2.00 to the bus person? I know the maitre'de comes around a couple of times per cruise but we usually dont tip him unless there was something special done such as changing your table or special celebrations.

You will be told exactly how much and when and it will be broken down in to who gets what when..dont worry about it. This info comes a night or two before cruise is finished...but it wont be $10 per day for everyone I assure you

HAL adds $10 per day per adult in a cabin (and I think it's $5 per child).
If you disagree, you can elect to have the charge removed & tip on your own. Or, as we do, we give an additional cash gratuity to our waiter, busboy & cabin steward. (Love those towel animals!)
