Shore Excursions in Juneau
Hi Everyone,
We have booked a multi-generational cruise for next August. We will be on the Nieuw Amsterdam sailing out of Vancouver to Tracy Arm, Juneau, Skagway & Ketchikan.
My parents and uncle are in their 70's and will be in an adjoining balcony cabin with my cabin with me, dh & dd (8).
I will probably wind up treating my parents for half of their cruise price and for excursions. I am willing to do this because both of my parents have declining health. My mother has a blood clot and is on Xarelto, which makes her very tired. My father is at the beginning stages of dementia. They want to delay the trip for a year because of finances, but I do not seeing them being able to take this trip in two years.
On the day that we arrive in Juneau, we cruise Tracy Arm first. We have the option of getting onto a smaller boat from the cruise ship for Tracy Arm, and I have booked that.
I was thinking of booking for my parents the flight excursion to Taku Glacier Lodge for the salmon bake. I figure that they might enjoy seeing the glacier ice from the air, and Taku Glacier Lodge does not involve walking on the ice. My husband, daughter and I would go on our floatplane with glacier trek, which we would definitely enjoy. My parents would not, because they will not walk on ice.
I figure that this might be an easy excursion for them to handle.
I also want to do a Mendenhall Glacier/whale watching tour. Would this be too much to do in one day?
I am pretty sure that we are going to use Chilkoot tours in Skagway to do the train/Bennett Lake tour. In Ketchikan, we will do a totem park (husband will pick) and Misty Fjords floatplane.
After the cruise, I was thinking of staying 2 nights in Vancouver. I would like to get to N. Vancouver to the Capilano Suspension Bridge and the Tree Tops park, and to take the gondola at Grouse Mountain.
In Vancouver, I want to see Stanley Park, the Anthropology Museum, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden, Gastown, market at Granville Island, maybe a water taxi. Maybe, we can see some of the Vancouver highlights before boarding the cruise. We are thinking of staying at the Pan Pacific the night before. Our flight will not arrive until 10 pm, so I do not know how early we can get up to sightsee.
Any comments or advice is greatly welcome. This is the first and only time that my parents will get to Alaska. This might be the last trip that they ever take.

Just a quick comment re Taku Glacier Lodge. Instead of a flight excursion -- maybe consider a whale watching excursion that includes a salmon lunch at Orca Point Lodge, more whale watching back to the pier, and then a stop at Mendenhall Glacier on the way back to town? That might be a better fit for your parents (?) and a less hectic than trying to squeeze in two different excursions. Whales/good lunch/glacier/Visitors center all in one.

For sure you picked great excursions!
I used to work on ships, so done many of the trips mentioned. I loved the Taku Glacier Lodge, the excitement there was the chance to see a bear, which we did, amazing! But as above said as well, all very hectic for your parents if you do more then one trip on a day. If you have a late sailing from Juneau they usually do a lovely salmon bake there as well. Reading your info I want to go back to Alaska too!
