Shore Excursions
Hi, we're a group of 4 women going on a 7 night Voyager of the Seas Mediterranean Cruise this summer. I need help deciding on shore excursion for Naples Port. One tour is Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii,Positano and Amalfi coast drive. Another tour goes to Capri instead of Sorrento. I've always wanted to go to Sorrento but don't want to miss something great if Capri is better. Anyone have any suggestions on which would be better?
I also have to decide on the tours for Sicily/Palermo port and Nice/Monte Carlo, Eze, etc. Would love to hear your thoughts on these ports and tours offered through Royal Carribbean. Thanks.

My husband and I were on Windstar two years ago and had a port at Naples. We went to the Blue Grotto and it was a lot of fun. We had time afterwards to walk around Capri, take the funicular, etc. We're going back this year and doing a drive tour of the Amalfi Coast. I think I would recommend the Blue Grotto/capri for a first time.

I was not impressed with Capri. I loved Naples and Pompeii. There just isn't enough time to do any of them justice. Monte Carlo was stuffy (go figure) and you can't get into the casino unless you pay. The hotels also try to keep you out. MC is only good to walk the small town center and find a nice cafe for a drink or snack. Nice was a fun place to walk the beach front, but a big city with lots of traffic.
We did the ship tour in Pompeii just because it covered so much ground in a short period of time. I think we took a high speed ferry at the end to the day back to the ship.
Nice and Monte Carlo we just hired a taxi at the pier. We went to Nice first then up to MC then back to the ship. We just flagged down a taxi at each location.

Hi Deb,
We are taking the same cruise 7/19; 4 gals also. We have posted on all site looking for others to share private tours (much better pricing with 8), but the boards are extremely quiet. I took this same cruise 4 yrs ago. We used private guides in all ports; in Naples - we used DriveAmalfi, and plan to use them again (I am going with different group). Last time we did Pompeii (this time we will get one of their guides through Pompeii) and Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento. I wouldn't want to miss any of them or fabulous eating. My understanding from others was that Capri was ok, very expensive. Love to hear about your trip if you return before 7/18.

Hi DebTS, if you haven't taken your cruise yet, Salvatore Lucibello of Drive Amalfi (also listed in the post above) is fabulous. He set up a tourguide for Pompei as well for our 6/06 Med cruise.
For the French Riviera we went with Michel of Revelation Tours... also fantastic.

Hi again Deb,
I have also used Salvatore of Drive Amalfi AND Michael LeGrand of Revelation Tours in Villefranche (Nice) and they are both great. I wouldn't have missed a moment of Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast (inc Sorrento and Positano). If you have already seen those areas, you might want to see Capri. The people on our ship that did go to Capri were not that impressed - felt it was more of a "shopping for those with lots of $$$." Do hope to hear about it when you return! Enjoy.
