Port of Marseille

We are trying to rent a car in Marseilles on a Sunday (when the ship is there) but all the car rental shops at the port are closed on Sundays - we were able to get a Hertz car at the train station - anyone know how far away it is from the port ?

I think she would be referring to the main train station in downtown Marseilles.

You may want to rethink the car rental in Marseilles. Shipmates on our cruise last year rented a car and were mugged and robbed in downtown Marseilles when they pulled over to check the map on how to get back to the drop-off point. The ship sailed by the time they got finished with the police, etc and they had to get themselves to the next port. Needless to say they were very upset by the whole thing. It is not a particularly nice city.

The train station is caleld St. Charles, and its neighborhood is not the best.

That post got away from me...I wanted to say also that Marseille itself is quite a nice city, very white, rather like San Francisco in the pre-skyscraper days. We enjoyed visiting Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde; there's a great view from the plaza.

Marseilles is a Mafia city so be alert at all times. It is a shame because it is a lovely place but the crime rate is very very high

we hired a cab to take us around for about an hour and then had lunch at the pier overseeing the boats. Then we headed back to the ship. it was worth the $50 euros we paid the driver.
