Just for the record, regarding my previous post. I know they bought a lot of drinks on the ship, so no, they're not cheap.

However, they enjoy a drink while getting ready for dinner, as well. Hence the reason they wanted a bottle of their choice beverage in their room.

Yes, we were on Carnival. I carried on one bottle of wine (allowed by Carniva), never was asked about it. In our checked, locked luggage we had a 2L pop bottle, closed tightly. Kept it in our room the whole time. Never was asked about it.

RCI's "bring aboard" liquor policy has been one of the most controversial cruise topics since last June. Before their policy change then, you could bring on anything from anywhere. Since then, it's been a little hard to figure out -- a fact compounded by difficulty in contacting RCI customer service and getting a straight answer. But from a combination of posts on several boards, it seems that OFICALLY you may not carry on liquor, but may buy it onboard for a $9.50 per bottle surcharge over duty free price, which isn't too bad. You may carry on soft drinks and bottled water (not a bad idea, check RCI's prices on these!) But, many report success in bringing liquor on, especially in checked luggage at embarkation.

Just returned from Carnival cruise on 4-7-02, and I do enjoy a glass of wine while getting ready for dinner. I took a bottle wrapped in my checked luggage and the steward kept it on ice for 3 days. Carnival is also putting soda in the room for purchase - ice was already in the room. When people did purchase liquor at port, they were directed to the person in the lobby so it could be stored.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions! Mouthwash bottles, new empty plastic(s), or soda bottles sound like good choices. AND - if another question's answer is correct - (this was from Paul) a special occasion warrants a bottle of wine brought on..no problems. We qualify..we sail on mother's day which happens to be my birthday and a few day's into the cruise is our anniversary. AND the 12th will be 3 months without a cigarette for me..after 47 years of puffing away!! Hip, hip, hooray!

Thanks again to you all for taking time to answer!!
