Is there any way to find out if there will be other cruise ships in the various ports at the same time our ship will be there? Just trying to determine the crowd factor ahead of time to make plans.

Since you were rather vague about where, when, how long, etc. I can't answer appropriately but in my experience in the Caribbean on my last 2 cruises, we were not the only ship in port.

I don't remember it being an issue however. Keep in mind though that the more ships in port obviously means more tourists in town...

I didn't think I needed to be specific. Just wondering if there's an internet site about the different ports that can list the ships expected to be in port on certain dates. If there are alot of ships, then I would want to do a planned excursion. If there aren't too many ships, then I know I have the freedom of waiting until I get to the port to take an excursion or just wander through the town. Our trip will be in the Caribbean.

I don't know about a site offhand Jon, but you might want to contact the cruise line, maybe they can provide you with some information. Just a thought.

Or maybe do a google search about specific ports. Let me know what you find out.

I am a travel agent/cruise specialist and it is a relatively safe assumption that there will be other ships docked in the main ports with your ship. Ports like Cozumel, Cancun, San Juan, Rome/Civitavecchia, etc. are ports of call for most of the major cruise lines on their 7-day itineraries. On more remote ports, like Belize or like London, which is served by Harwich and/or Southhampton, there is a good chance that your ship will be the only one in the port on that day.

In 2003 we were in Cozumel in Jan and there were 11 ships in town. It was terrible, this Feb we were in Cozumel and there were just 3, much nicer. This is an important issue as to how nice the port will be.

Since this is such an "important issue" for folks you would think that those who agree with that would do this kind of info hunting BEFORE they book a cruise, wouldn't you? But, I'll bet they don't and then end up telling us how "terrible" a port was because there were so many other ships there....gee, sorry!

It was only "important" to me to plan on whether it would be worth my while to do my own excursion, or take one through the cruise ship. I think knowing the amount of crowds helps with this. I would never want to drive myself all over an unknown island if I knew there were 7 or 8 other ships there with equally-lost tourists. Also, if I know there are several other ships, then instead of just meandering through the streets for shopping, eating, etc., with all the other thousands of people, I'll take an excursion that gets me out of the main town.

So, JonJon, no reason to make assumptions that just aren't true. This was an actual, legitimate question that had no room for a reply like yours.

To Jon: there will be plenty of cabbies in port no matter how many ships are in at the same time. No worries. Do it on your own.
