Okay, now I'm really scared.

Read in today's paper that Mexico is coming 'unhinged'! Protests in every city, Mexico city is unsafe for tourists, and the recent disputed elections have sparked riots, some directed against tourists, and that it is getting out of hand. We are scheduled to go there soon, and would like to hear, first hand, from anyone who has recently returned from Mexico...what's going on, or is it just journalist hype??

We are scheduled to cruise to Mexico in a couple of weeks also. I hope this will be cleared up soon.

I think it looks worse then it is.
On a cruise you donot come to Mexico city, but in general only in tourists resorts.
Avoid city-centers and know (or aks around) who areas of big cities to avoid.
If you stick to the most popular destinations, no problem.

US Dept of State website has no travel warnings for Mexico. I would keep an eye on that website. If you bought travel insurance, sometimes there is a provision for cancellation if State Dept has issued warning.

Cozumel is a nice small island where you will absolutely have no problems.
Also making a trip to e.g. Tulum, Playa del carmen on the mainland will give no problems.
Just enjoy it!

A few years ago, on a cruise, we were supposed to go to I think it was Martinique or may be it was St. Martin. President Bush and Prime Minister Miterine (sp) were supposed to meet there and there was talk - only talk - of a general strike. After our cruise had started, the capt. announced the change of ports and explained why.Our cruise ship went to Antiqua instead. As it turned out there was no strike. A cruise ship will NOT go to ANY port if there may be a problem there!

Here is a link to the US State Department consular information sheet for Mexico:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_p...s/cis_970.html

Also check the "regional information" tab for more detail about your destination.

As a former life insurance underwriter, it was amusing to hear people protest a surcharge when we rated travel to dangerous areas of the world. The state department "warnings" only apply to places where you are really taking your life in your hands by going there. The consular sheets give you a better taste of what to expect in other areas.
