Is the Norway really that bad?

Tress, there are so many conflicting opinions on the Norway, that I can only speak from experience. We did the transatlantic crossing in April, and when we saw the ship, thought it was very lovely, however, once on it, we felt differently. We did have a lovely suite on the Sky deck, and great service from our cabin stewardess. The ship just did not look well maintained, and that is always a concern. Yes, the elevators are few, small, and slow, but that is why you use the stairs. The food was so-so in the dining room, but our waiter tried very hard to do a great job, and he did. Wine prices were high considering what size the tiny glasses were....Do bring some wine on board...they won't bother you. The area in the back of the ship, where they served buffets, look more like a military mess hall, and seating was on the short side. We always ate in the dining room. We would not go on the Norway again, but we always enjoy a cruise because of all the nice people you met. That is by far the best part. If you bought these tickets at auction, just go and have a nice Christmas. It will be sunny and warm, and you won't have to cook.

We were on the Norway this past August, on her Eastern Caribbean sailing. The ship is old, and in need of major refurbishing. Our cabin had a bath tub, with no mat. When we asked the cabin steward, he said that he would find one, he didn't. The food was good. Their tender service (from ship to ports) is the worst we have encountered. They use large boats, and do not leave until full. Other cruise lines, make a continuous route. I didn't even get off the ship.

I was on the Norway in 1996 and vowed I would never return to her. With that said, I must say that my family had a great cruise and I don't regret a second I spent on the Norway. Mostly the experience you will have will depend on your attitude. I was very disappointed at the service, food, and maintenance level of the ship, as well as some of the things said before, but rather than letting those things destroy my vacation, I rolled with the punches and found many things to enjoy about my vacation.

Tress,
My husband and I were on the Norway in Feb. 1999. This was our first cruise and we had a wonderful time. We were in the least expensive room you can buy with a double bed. I'm a pretty picky person and I did find the room extremely small and outdated but we were there so little. Because you have been on several cruises you should be prepared for a much older ship that does not have the contemporary look of todays cruise ships, however, that is what makes the Norway so special. It's really interesting to experience what the old trans-atlantic cruise ships were like - elegant in many ways. I also recommend eating in the dining room - food no where near as good on deck buffets. We thought the dining room food was excellent. We also ate at the optional pay extra dining room one night - make a reservation early in your trip - and loved it. It's a nice change for one night and is much more intimate. We found the service throughout our cruise to be excellent. Keep a positive attitude and you'll have a wonderful time.
