Hi Robert,

First, make sure your suite has a balcony. That way you do not have to run up on deck to be outside.

I would say, book a suite in the very rear of the ship, particularly one that has a wrap-around balcony. You will be able to see in many directions.

Also, the buffet is usually in the back of any ship. You may be able to choose a cabin right below the buffet. You can run up to the buffet and get food for your wife. If you are questioned as to why you are taking food out of the buffet, just explain the reason or ask permission is advance.

The more expensive ships (generally Celebrity and up) have great room-service food. You do not have to pay for any food, but give a dollar or two to the fellow that brings it.

Book immediately to get your choice of cabin.

Granted there will quite a bit of walking to get around on the ship but you will have plenty of time to do this and there are plenty of places to sit down in all the public areas.

Doesn't sound like your wife needs a wheelchair.

Good luck,

Paul

Robert - I'm surprised that Paul recommended a suite with a balcony - all suites on the Mercury have verandas.
I'm also surprised he didn't mention to you (and you may already be aware of this) that butler service is available and full breakfast is provided along with in-suite lunch and dinner. While I believe one of the highlights of a cruise is eating in the dining room, if your wife is unable to get around, the in-suite service is a good alternative.

Best wishes for a great cruise.

The only ship to sail a nine night sailing on 5/2/03 is the Mercury.

Took the 10-day repositioning cruise from L.A. to Alaska a couple years back on Galaxy, and it was the best cruise I've ever done. In order of impressions: Food was faboo, service impeccable and friendly, room was generous, decor and common rooms were impressive and had good variety, and the shows were excellent. Not much for kids to do, and the weather didn't invite many to the pool, but the days at sea were good because of the activites planned. Casino is there, well stocked with slots and tables, and you can even bet in your room using the web-tv. I loved it, as did my wife. One tip: plan to spend some time (and money) in the spa, it's really worth it, and take at least two-three tours in Alaska. The ones the ship runs are excellent.
Bruce
