How safe is doing your own shore excursions?
On a cruise to the Mexican Riveria, one of the guys rented a motorcycle in Mazatlan, was pulled over by the police and had to pay a bribe. That brought on other stories by passangers that had problems going on their own instead of booking shore excursions through the ship. We are going to W. Caribbean this June and don't want to book shore ex through the ship. What are your experiences?

We have always done excusrions on our own and never had a problem. If you were to go in a private cab I would make sure there were other people besides just 2 people or a couple. We have done mostly the S. Caribbean Islands. No problem at at all and saved quite a bit in comparison to the ships.

The general rule in Mexico if you are stopped by the police that you are guilty until proved innocent and are jailed... it's not a pretty story to read about.. We rent a cab and do our own tours.. only once in Cozumel did we rent a jeep, but it was to the far side of the island basically uninhabited then.

I never book ship excursions. Be well informed and take advice from experienced travelers to your interested area (forget the posts with raves who haven't been there). W. Caribbean is pretty safe with the exception of Ocho Rios- choose tours carefully if going independent there.
