The longer the cruise, the older the passangers.
I usually take 10 day cruises.
I would say about 85% were over 55/60.
Most cruises were dead at midnight, including the Crow's Nest. Even the casino gets pretty empty.
I like Hal and I am not looking to party all night.

Is 55 considered old? I guess I'm old and didn't even know it.

To answer you Tony, yes, at 55 you are ancient--old--history--past tense.
NAW, just kidding man--55 isn't even near old.

Good to hear, I guess I'm not too old either at 47, maybe? What is all this talk about all the old people on HAL?? Although we were only on a 7 day cruise, I didn't see all these old folks referred to...maybe they were in their cabins for all 7 days! I sailed in August 2002...only a few months ago so I feel I'm kind of up to date. We're planning our next cruise on HAL already. Apparently, Starfish was on some unique cruise...?? In all fairness, I do believe that HAL advertizes in the AARP magazine. My Dad receives this and I've seen their ads. Is this where this "misconception" is coming from? I just don't feel that old (still have a daughter in High School) but according to the Fodorites...maybe they're describing me as one of the "old people" NOT! Sorry! HAL seemed perfect to us at any age!

Janice,

Most of my cruises were 10 days, with only 1, 7 day cruise. As I said, the longer the cruise, the age usually goes
up.
Out of 5, 10 day cruises, only one was jumping in the Crow's Nest at midnight, the others were dead, only a handful of people.
This past Dec I went to the Crows Nest between 11:30 and midnight at least 5 times and there were no more than 10 people in the entire lounge.
The one 7 day cruise was no different but it was between Thankgiving and Christmas. This may not thrill a 30 year old.
The time of year might have something to do with the average age. I never cruise during holidays or summer.

It all depends on what you are looking for in a cruise.
I love Hal and will continue to cruise on their ships. I hate for people to think that the ship is loaded with a younger crowd (average age of 30) and it is a non stop party until the wee hours of the morning.
What is OLD? It depends on what age you are. If you are 30 , most 30 year olds consider 50 old.
From what I have seen the AVERAGE age is over 50. I am not saying there are no passanger that are in their 20's,30'or40's. If you took EVERYONE that was on all my cruises, the AVERAGE age was probably somewhere in the sixties.

Amazing how people's opinions differ. I'm in my 40s, and recently went on my first cruise (10 days) on Holland America. While I didn't see a lot of people in their 20s, I certainly didn't feel that the people around me were old or that the ship was dull. Given the wonderful service and all the amenities, I would certainly cruise with them again.

Stick with Celebrity unless you are ready for a crowd with an average age in the late 70's. Many are in good shape, but also lots of wheelchairs and oxygen bottles...

You are kidding right?? We sailed on HAL twice and felt both were exceptional with one being the best cruises of our life. I guarantee you that on our Mediterranean cruise there were not a bunch of old people with oxygen bottles. I think HAL is a notch above Princess and Celebrity both...You will find a good mixture of all ages and like me, you probably won't notice the average age any different than any of the nicer cruise lines. Perhaps I'm in the minority but I prefer a mid-size ship rather than the mega ships. I can live without the rock climbing etc. but love the warm sincerity, better quality food and nicer amentities and larger cabins on Holland American. I think you'd find it suitable for any age....for families, there is even a child's club for the kids and another for the teens.

Old is anyone who is cronolically 10 years your senior, or when you are 20 pounds larger than planned. That takes in a lot of us.

Each cruise company has a target market. HAL's more sedate and upscale. Just fit your life style to the target and go for it.

btw, I can still out dance my kids, and put my grand kids to shame, but a disco...omg.

We have been on 4 cruise lines and have yet to have a bad cruise. We sail to Antartica on HAL next year and will have a ball. Who cares what age your fellow passengers are .Having fun is up to you and heaven knows all the the lines give you every chance to do your thing. We should all be so lucky. Enjoy.
