Cruise vs. Windjammer
We are planning a trip with a group of friends, some want to go on a cruise, some on a windjammer. We're all in our late 20's or early 30's. We do agree we want night life. What is there to do on a windjammer at night? Going in Feb. 2003.

You can find a lot of information at the Windjammer Fan Club BB on Delphi. You probably already know that there are no casinos on these ships. It's pretty much a 'make your own fun in the evening' deal. They do costume parties, crab races and often have a local band on board one night. Depending on the ship and the itinerary, you have the opportunity to go to shore in the evening and enjoy the local nightlife. I'm not trying to discourage you - I love Windjammer and have sailed several times. But it's not for everybody. If some of your group leans towards a big cruise ship vacation, you may want to consider Windjammer's Legacy. It's their newest ship and has some amenities not found on the other WJ ships (deck chairs, bar stools and nicer cabins). She sails the Virgin Islands in the winter and that would probably be your best bet for nightlife on shore. You can also check out the WJ BB on their website for more info.

As Pam has said. Ther is NO comparison between a crusie and windjammers. We have done 3 and loved them (Yankee Clipper, Flying Cloud and Mandalay) and 2 cruised. Monarch of the Sea and Dawn Princess. Windjammer cabins are what I call early boy scout camp (and this includes the upper priced ones (we did deck cabin on the Flying Cloud and found it a waste of money.
THey are great but NOT for eveyone.
What you will find on the delphi forum is DEDICATED WJ fans who will give you the slightly varnished truth because because "bad" as in found something wrong with a WJ talk is not allowed. The caterer mostly to these fans and you will read alot about boozing and wenching and manning and the sex deck on the poly but in fact the cruises are not like that. They are very laid back and unharried and the perfect spot to shed the world for a week or 2. You can always find a place to be quite or alone andjump in/out of the group riots.

Hey Dave
I have done both,in two weeks I will be doing a cruise on the princess, I would rather be on a windjammer. I could not turn down the deal i got on princess. I have been on the Poly out of St martin, it was very laid back, You never had to dress up. There were a lot of great people on the ship. One night we partied in St Barts, windjammer hires local bands to play on the ship at night. The food was basic but very good. The excusion were better than any thing I have done on the big cruise lines. The cabins are very small but comfortable, what was really great is you can take your pillow, grab a mat and sleep on the deck under the stars. Just remember it is like camping on the water but neater. Also the bar is very resonable. Im sick im not doing a Windjammer now. Have fun with what ever you do!!!!
