Cruise out of Venice, Italy - Hotel and car rental return
Hello,
My husband and I are departing Venice, Italy on a Cruise in May. We will be on the Silversea's Silver Spirit, departing from the Marittima Basin/Port. We will be arriving in Venice one night prior to the cruise. Does anyone have any suggestions to hotels near where the cruise ships dock? Or doesn't it really matter where we stay if we take a water taxi?
I should also mention that we will be arriving in Venice by car and will need to return our car before making our way to our hotel. Any suggestions on where to return the car? Airport or elsewhere?
Thank you,

The last question is the easiest. Most of the major car rental agencies have drop off points at the Piazzale Roma(PR) , which is the only place you can drive to on the island anyway. This is vastly superior to the airport. From the PR then the cruise lines usually run buses from the PR directly to the ship.
Because of the answer above, many folks choose a hotel near the PR, and then walk to the piazzale, then catch a bus or taxi to the ship. Conversely, in my opinion, this gameplan places you away from the nicest parts of Venice, so why bother? There is a water bus service that goes straight from San Marcos Plaza stright to the cruise terminal, so many return cruisers stay near San Marcos and use this.
Now for the tough question. Most hotels in Venice have a rather strict 2 night minimum and they are not intersted in your business for only one night. Some of the hotels around the PR may not have this policy as they do cater some to the cruise trade. I would suggest you stay two nights in Venice, as that gives you one full day to enjoy the city. Or conversely, you may consider NOT staying there and driving in on the day of your embarkation, drop off the rental at the PR office, and proceed straight to the ship. May I ask where you are driving in from?
If you still are intent on finding that one special optimal Venice one-nighter, may I suggest re-posting your quesiton on the Europe/Italy thread. Posting this question on this cruise thread risks a high probability of being ignored.
Regardless, departing Venice at dusk on a cruise liner floating down the Canal Guidecca on your way to the Adriatic is a rare travel experience that our language is inadequate to describe. I'd love to see your post-trip report.

Hi docdan,
Thank you so much for your response. We will be dropping off our car at the Piazzale Roma. We found a hotel that fortunately permits one night and is within walking distance to a few of the major tourist sites. We will be doing more research to find the best way to get to where our ship is - i'm guessing water taxi.
Thank you again for your help!

That's nice. One note is that Venice was a remarkably tourist friendly locale, and it is reasonable to expect the hotel staff to have an excellent answer to the question of which of probably several options are best on how to get to the ship from the hotel.

I too am interesting in reading a trip report or at least a report on how your cruise went. DH and i are thinking of the silverseas from Venice cruise in 2014. Please report back when you get home......

If you are just staying one night pre-cruise, I'd look for a hotel close to Piazzale Roma instead of elsewhere in Venice. The city is compact and walkable (or you can easily take a 7 euro vaporetto ride to get to St. Mark's square in about 10 minutes less time than it takes to walk). But my theory is that it's better to just get to a hotel where you can drop off your bags than having to deal with lines and the hassle of traveling across the city on arrival.
I'm staying at the M Gallery Hotel Papadapoli, which is about 5 minutes walk from Piazzalle Roma when I go on a cruise in June this year. It's (for me) an expensive hotel, but it's really convenient, which is what I wanted.
You can certainly stay wherever you want in Venice, but for me the question was the ease of getting TO the hotel, nor do I want to pay 100 euros for a water taxi. I know I have plenty of time to get to my ship on the day of departure, but I'm going to be exhausted after arriving in Venice and don't want to travel across the city or waste all the time it will take to do that.
But during previous stays in Venice, I've certainly stayed elsewhere in the city.

There is a "new" People mover from Piazza Roma to the Cruise and Ferry Port Entrance. The cost is only 1 euro per person.
The unfortunate part is that once you get to the port, it is a fairly long walk to some terminals. So I guess it all depends on what terminal you are leaving from, and how much luggage you have with you.
