There is a tour guide by the name of Peat Taylor that will take you wherever you want to go. He appears very highly regarded on several cruise boards.

As far as traveling on foot - there is a shopping mall called "Taj Mahal" about 4 blocks off.

Honestly - I would take a tour of some sort. After my tour, I ventured off on my own to find a newspaper and was followed by several. I thought I was going to be robbed. And then they tried to push drugs on me. I eventually ran and found the shopping mall where I met up with people from my ship. As a group - when we walked back together - I felt safe but I was so scared being alone. I have also heard several people robbed by taxi drivers so be very careful.

Here is Peat Taylor's email:

[email protected]

I have not used him personally but have heard great things about him. Also - specify that you want "Peat" specifically.

Tony, I've been to Ocho Rios several times. A hotel by the name of "The Jamaican Inn" (owned by 2 fellows from Miami...and only word of mouth ad.) is a
great place to go for lunch! The seafood cocktail is unbelievable....the dining is "open air"....I've stayed there several times and it's a very
"international spot!" The rooms are
over the water.....people from all over the world stay there year after year.
You will need a taxi, though......but it will be VERY interesting! Have fun!

Hi Tony: We've been several times and I'd stay away from Dunns River Falls. Its nice to look at but the idea of climbing it is too much of a risk when you are that far from medical care. I've never been there but that I didn't see the ambulance taking someone to the hospital who fell. And, if you survive the climb you'll be directed to leave via a hord of local huts where you'll be hounded to buy tourist trinkets.
I'd stay on the ship and enjoy the pool! When we were there we hired a taxi, told him exactly where we wanted to go (might have been Taj Mahal), but he insisted that we go to another place. I felt like a captive and was scared by the whole incident. I don't have any fond memories of Jamaica...

I have taken Peat Taylors tours and he is excellent! He takes you to the falls before they are crowded.
Depending on how fit an active and daring you are depends on if you like Dunn's River. The falls themselves are beautiful and if you can get there before they are crowded, it is great! But when throngs of people are there, it can be dangerous. Essentially you are climbing up boulders with ice cold mountain water rushing over your feet. In between elevations, there are plunge pools. It is approximately a 660 foot climb and ther rocks can be very slippery and hard to get a hold of. The adventurous at heart love it. Been there, done that - as far as I am concerned.
Another recommended excursion is horseback riding into the ocean. Lots of raves for that.
As far as near the pier, there is a hotel where you can pay a fee and hang out at the beach. You can also go to the nearby Sandals, but I think their "day trippers" fee is $60 - but you get to use all their water toys and food facilities.
Post if you have any more questions

We took Peat Taylors tour last summer. You don't have to climb Dunns Falls. There are wooden steps that go the whole way down. We did climb it and it was fun, but I couldn't enjoy the scenery as much because I was worried about slipping. He also took us to Fern Gully, an outdoor crafts mall, and for lunch at Bibibips(? sp.) overlooking the beach-very good food.
