bringing wine in checked luggage?

Last June we sailed X from Venice to Barcelona. We purchased wine (in bottles thank you very much) in virtually every port, took it on board, took it to dinner in the dining room, paid the corkage fee ($15 I think). Other than a sommelier who turned up his nose at a couple of our selections (he was right on about one wine, dead wrong about another), we were quite happy.

suerich I am not taking anymore of your harassment.I told you I did that back in 1995 when I was single and ignorant. Now we go to California every year and have a lovely cellar. When we go on vacation, we take a couple wines that we have saved for celebrating. I don't want to spend huge bucks to sail a luxury cruise line. It's not worth it, as I eat vegetarian meals about 80 % of the time anyway. I like a ship which is large so I can walk the promenade Deck for an hour. I also want a first class gym. I don't consider cruising the best way to experience any port. We sail for the ship. not the ports. But I hate cheap wine and I don't believe you should pay huge bucks for crappy wine. Ishould be a sommelier, I know much more than most of them. We also tip our wait and room staff generously and well over the amount they recommend. I do not think it's a terrible thing to enjoy a few bottles of your favorite wine while you vacation. Period.

I have been on several ships over the years. I have had several very fine bottles of wine seized. Sometimes they were returned at the end, sometimes not. I have found a few surefire ways to get any alcoholic beverage on board. This includes wine, the hard stuff and even beer. First for the beer. Buy a 12 pack of soda in the cardboard box. Carefully open one end, removed 6-8 cans and replace them with beer cans. Re-seal with hot glue and let dry well before packing. The hard liquor I have placed in a Camelback water hydration back pack and simply carried it on. You will need to pack the dry compartments with clothing or electronics. This is hard to detect unless the screener is familiar with the hydration pack. Another way I have gotten booze on the ship was to take a water bottle, fill it to the very top, tape the cap with duct tape. I then smear the bottle with KY or olive oil, then shove it up my you know what!! This works fine until you need to bend over and pick up your luggage. So don't use too much lube. Sometimes dry works just as well. It all depends on how much rear end work you've had done. Be creative and don't take anything you are not willing to lose.

Celebrity has a no-alcohol policy for bring stuff on board. On a recent cruise, I brought 8 bottles carefully bubble wrapped in my checked baggage, and 3 bottles in my carry on. Nobody said a word to me.
I brought a bottle to the dining room table each night and paid the $15 corkage with no problem.

7 Oct to Bermuda out of Bayonne. We also brought vodka in the water bottles, but ended up not using it. Cabin steward had no problem keeping the ice bucket filled.
Alcoholic drinks were very expensive. Beer was $4.20 to $4.50. You could purchase a bucket of beer and get 5 for the price of 4. Martini's were about $9.00. Bloody Marys and Screwdrivers were the "drink of the cruise" for $4.95 + 15% tip.

Unless you hide it in some other bottle, you can't get it on NCL. In September my brother in law packed several bottles of wine in luggage. They confiscated and sent him a letter indicating where it could be picked up atthe end of the cruise.

I called Costa yesterday, they prohibit bringing any wine on board. Has anyone had recent experience (Costa only!!) with bubblewrapping wine and putting it in their checked luggage?
We will be in venice for a few days before boarding and I was looking forward to buying some good red wine to enjoy on the ship....

I'm sorry, no experience with Costa, but think about it. Are they going to go thru everybody's luggage? Have you cruised before? It's a zoo getting luggage to/from the ship and to/from the stateroom cabins.

We just sailed Carnival on 6/21/07 and cruised to the eastern Caribbean. We took three bottles of assorted booze packed in the luggage and had no problems. In addition, we also brought 4 bottles of fine wine that we carried aboard. They did charge a corkage fee, but that was fine as the wine was much better than we could have purchased. At every port we then came back onboard with our pockets stuffed with "minis" of our favorite booze. Geeze...I may have a drinking problem! Oh well, had a great time.
