Best Way From Civitavecchia To Rome?
We shall be arriving in Civitavecchia after a very long cruise....translate lots of luggage...We plan to spend a few days in Rome and prefer to make our own...not cruise line arrangements. What would be the preferred means to transport ourselves and the luggage into the heart of Rome?

Kelley, ask hotel if they can provide limo service from pier.If not, they will make arrangements for you. We stayed at Crowne Plaza in Nov. and this is what they did for us. If you have a lot of luggage, train is out and the regular taxie. Use a limo.

Thank You, Sandy
Why is the train out because of luggage? It seems to me we took the train from Venice to Milan after a long cruise several years ago and just checked the big luggage...Do you see a problem with this? Do you know if the train is some distance from the cruise terminal?
I am wondering if we might get together with other psgrs and rent a van...do you think rentals would be available at the cruise terminal?

I'd hire a van, from an Italian tour operator. There are many available on the web. I had one, which services I used last year, but I changed computers and didn't save his info.

Taxi drivers in Rome are thieves. You ough to be carefull, otherwise they will charge you an enormous amount of $$$, mostly with so much luggage.

I used the services of this company one year ago. I rented a van with a driver through Italy, from Rome to Florence, with many stops in between. The car was new and the driver was good. It was the best price I got for such a trip ( six days long).

http://www.sometviaggi.com/contact_frs.htm

We also did it last May. It's not that far to the station. Depending on where your ship docks, it's anywhere from 50 yards to a few hundred yards out to the main street, and about 3 blocks further (to the right along the waterfront) from there. There is a free port shuttle bus from ships out to the street, and we walked from there.
