BE HONEST! Alaskan cruise...seasickness??
My husband and I really want to take the Alaskan inland passage cruise (one way for a week) for our anniversary. Have never been on a cruise. I get very sick just at the amusement park rides and he was violently ill on a fishing trip in Florida. Our friends say it's "different" now and the ships are so big we won't feel a thing, but I'm thinking we should keep our feet on land. Thanks for any input and
experiences you've had.

Our sailing on the Diamond Princess 5/15 was smooth as glass but from what I've heard the next following week had very rough waters during the first "at sea day" from Seattle to Juneau. The larger the ship (Diamond is currently the largest) the less you'll feel as mentioned. But the only way to "really see" Alaska is by boat. You can also try the transderm scop patch. I say go for it
Alaska is too beautiful to pass up.

If prone to seasickness- TAKE PRECAUTIONS. You can encounter rough sailing in Alaska- you are on water.
Bonine is an excellent product, consult your MD. As for
"But the only way to "really see" Alaska is by boat. "
Totally untrue and you see only a very small portion by cruise ship. There is plenty interior to occupy 10 trips.
My opinion only- I would never consider a one way cruise without at least 5 additional days interior touring, 7 with a cruise tour. It is costly in time and money to get to/from Anchorage-take advantage of the excellent touring opportunities, way too many people just pass though having no idea what they are missing. I won't consider a one way without College Fjords either and give a big edge to Seward- but again for the touring opportunities. If you don't do any then it doesn't make a difference Whittier or Seward. Budget fully for costly shore excursions - you get only half a trip without them. If you purchase a cruisetour- be very educated on WHAT you are purchasing, over and over I get emails from people who clearly aren't. You can see twice as much for half the price going on your own however. Head to your library and take out Alaska travel books, including THE MILEPOST. The more you know the better your trip will be for you.

My husband is very prone to motion sickness and never thought he could cruise - we have now been on 3. Our cruise to Alaska hit a very rough patch at the Queen Charlottes (typical) and he was fine - he took ginger tablets every morning when he got up. We also hit very rough water in the Western Caribbean where we could hardly stand up walking through the ship one day and once again, no problems.

I too am very prone to motion sickness. I get airsick when flying with only light turbulance. My doctor recommended Bonine which is available at Walmart without a prescription. It works similar to dramamine but does not make you drowsy. My wife and I took an Alaskan cruise at the end of May (Dawn Princess). We had 2 days of rough water when we were at sea, but I took my medication and had no problems. Don't pass up an opportunity for a wonderful vacation. Good Luck!
