Alaska in September
Considering an Alaskan cruisetour in September 2012. Cruise leaves on 9/1 and 9/15. 9/1 is $500 more pp than 9/15. Is there that much difference in the weather to justify that much $$$? Want to take advantage of the shoulder rates but can't go in May.

I think its cheaper for a reason. I know someone who took an Alaskan repositioning cruise embarking in mid Sept. and he said it was pretty cold at times. We finished our Alaska cruise in late August, the 29th I think, 2005 and we had decent weather.

We just returned from the Golden Princess Sept 10-17. We have really great weather. We spent 3 days in Seattle before the cruise and it was sunny in the mid 60's. Same for Juneau. In Skagway it was drizzling in the morning and then burned off by the afternoon. Late afternoon/early evening it was foggy and cooler, but still nice. We ended up dragging around our coats it was so warm to us. In Ketchican it was cool and cloudy, but no rain. In Glacier Bay is drizzled most of the time there, but the temps were like low 60's. I thought we were going to freeze to death, but we were either hot or comfortable cool. Saw tons of people in shorts and flip flops. We were told that this was some of the best weather they have seen in the past few weeks. When we returned to Seattle on Saturday it was cloudy and did drizzle in the evening. Sunday it was cool, but we walked without coats to the Market and it was fine.
The shops in all of the towns were having huge sales. Most stores everything was 50% off.
To answer your question, there is not real guarantee about weather from one week to another, so just pick the date and price best for you and hope for the best.

There is no accounting for the weather, but almost all folks do hit some rain/drizzle along the Alaska coast at some point, insects seem to be less of a problem later in the year. If you click on my name you can find a TR of our trip late Aug/early Sept this year.

Weather can change overnight. What you have here is the later in the season, the higher the chance you will get "cooler" weather. Regardless of when you are going, you will have more than 2/3 chance of rain so rain gear is a must. It may snow in late September further up north.
While the ship is moving, the open deck would be cold. If you are at the bow of the ship approaching the glacier, dress real warm. Layers, gloves, hoodie, scarf all necessity. Ships will provide blankets so make sure you take advantage of them too.
Ketchiken will give you best bang for the buck in terms of souvenir jackets. $20 will get you a decent one. End of season sale starts late August. DW bought half a dozen last year to give away as present. So, if that is your first stop, don't bring jacket and buy there, wear right away!
Have not encounter insect problem in late July or August. Good luck!
