1st time cruiser - informal dress code on Celebrity

My husband and I are going on our first cruise at the end of this month on Celebrity's Galaxy. There are 2 informal nights on the cruise, and according to Celebrity's website, men are requested to wear "a jacket, shirt, and tie." My husband doesn't not own a sport coat since his office has a "business casual" policy, and we do not want to buy one just to suit this occasion. Could he just wear a dress shirt and tie and still be appropriately dressed?

Informal nights request a coat and tie but in fact no more than half the people will be this dressed. Celebrity attracts an older croud and many of the people will be attired in striped pants, white shoes, supenders etc. You get the picture. They also request no jeans or shorts after 6pm on deck or public spaces but again, nobody follows the request, especially the older and younger folks.

Even though a coat and tie are requested, my husband has always worn dresss pants and a nice long-sleeved shirt. About half the men will be attired like this and about half in sport coats and ties.
In response to john's post, Celebrity may attract an older crowd than Carnival, but the age range is roughly equal to Royal Caribbean and considerably younger that Princess, HAL, or the luxury lines. Celebrity is also a class act, and striped pants, white shoes and suspenders are not the norm.

Here is a FYI. I got a coat and a pair of pants that doubles for a dark suit at Sears for about $100 ( yes, it was on sale 25% off). I use the coat as a sport coat with other pants the rest of the time. Get a cheep tie from Target and he is set. Hope this helps.
Hi- I have been on 3 Celebrity Cruises- and about 15 other cruises--
Celebrity's informal is just like the post above: a nice POLO shirt and khakis is FINE for informal nite--and that is for all ages-- YOu may see a couple of sport coats ,but the norm nowadays is more informal on informal nite--BUT NO JEANS!!!
Celebrity is NOT stuffy in the least and has ALL ages groups--Do NOT believe the white shoes and suspenders story-
You will retired people, honeymooners, people with infants, people with teenagers ,empty nesters etc---IT is a terrific line!

I don’t understand this whole phobia, that men have about a coat and tie,,,, everyman should have a good navy blue blazer, don’t you ever go to weddings or funerals, church? Gee wiz is there nothing you dress up a bit for?

Wow,

If he's worried about the informal nights, what's he going to do on the "formal" nights. On a 7 day cruise, there are 2 formal nights (read dress suit or TUX!!) and 2 slightly less dressy nights. My husband and I (young 40s) picked Celebrity partially because we love getting dressed up for evening events and I had heard some of the other lines were into casual cruising -- not why someone goes on a cruise. I would get him a dress jacket (something sort of dressy but also appropriate with more casual wear), so he will have something for the dressier 4 nights where at least one would expect their neighboring diners to be dressed in a suit jacket and tie. Celebrity is supposed to be dressier than Carnival and Norweigan, which has taken to catering to those cruisers who want to dress down. I hope you have a great time, just remember, one should dress appropriately (not necessarily in a tux) but at least in accordance with the general guidelines.
