We bareboat chartered a catamaran out of the BVI's (West End, Tortola)in June for 14 days and loved it so much that we booked to go again same time 2010 before we left the islands!
The BVI's contain some of the most amazing places to snorkel and beautiful beaches on earth. Including the island of Anegada, 3rd largest barrier reef in the world. We are hooked and will try to sail there at least once a year if we can!!!

markrosy, I love Abaco. I didn't make it down to Elboy Cay but we had so much fun boating around Green Turtle, Great Guana, Treasure Cay and taking in the great beaches.
Have a great trip!
catsailor, we've toyed with that idea. It sounds like a wonderful trip! I, too, would love to see pics if you have them.

kellybeaches: Sailing trips are great for families. This was our second time back to the BVI's, once with my family, husband, 2 teenagers. This year we took friends with small children (6 & 9) and they had an amazing time. Plenty of stuff to do and no time to get bored. Not sure how old your kids are, but I think anyone older than 5 is a good candidate for sailing.
As I mentioned, we hope to go back every year for as long as we can. 2010 our kids are taking a friend each, in addition to brininging our in-laws.
I will post a link to photos later on today. In the meantime check out this website www.traveltalkonline.com - BVI section for information on sailing there and trip reports from other sailors or landbased vacations. Tons of information and a great website. I used it to plan my last 2 trips.

catsailor-thanks! Yeah, we'll have to wait a bit-our kids are 1 and 4, and we're hoping to have more down the road so it may be awhile before they're all old enough to go. But it's definitely in our future (way future) plans! We did do a day trip on a power cat from St. John over to Jost Van Dyke-it's so much fun being out on the water. And we've already booked a 52' power cat day trip from St. Martin to Anguilla for this May-I can't wait! What kind of boat did you take?

kellybeaches: We chartered a 44ft sailing cat with 4 double staterooms/heads. Nice size for 8 pp. JVD is a beautiful island. Where did you go, White Bay, Great Harbor or Sandy Spit?
There is nothing like a sailing vacation. Being on your own schedule. In addition, nothing like the BVIs for island hopping. There is something for everyone!

kellybeaches: Just as I thought, you hit the major sites on JVD. Sandy Spit is my fav. Awesome snokelling to the reef on the left, I snorkelled with a school of tarpon this year, all bigger than me! Didn't make it to Soggy Dollar this year, a squall blew in just as we arrived , no mooring buoys available, had to go to Little Harbor, went to Sydneys instead due to shallow anchorage in White Bay. Next year we're going to start at White Bay as we have to try the Soggy Dollars painkillers.
If you have been to VG I am sure you've been to The Baths & Devils Bay. Unbelievably beautiful. Did you go to Savannah Bay?
As I mentioned, you can't beat BVIs for island hopping. This year we went to Anegada. Amazing!! Only 9 months until we return (kind of pathetic that we are counting, but cant wait). Once you're bitten by the bug, you're hooked!!!

Alya, I am a trip report junkie, always post a trip report, doesn't matter how big or small.
This was a cruise, so the report is here (changed the name on Fodor's, don't be surprised):

Next year, going to Miami to sail to Belize and Honduras. You see, being good citizens we want to help the political situation on Honduras

Two Caribbean trips, a cruise over Thanksgiving to eastern caribbean ports of call, and our annual trip to St. Barth's in January. St. Barth has it all, gorgeous beaches, incredible food, more incredible wine, a cool, upscale vibe, great shopping and a vibrant art scene, and kind, gracious people. And it is one of the safest islands in the Caribbean. I am soooo ready!

We went to Curacao in May. Not what I expected. Though we had a good time, won't return. Going back to Cozumel in December. Our 4th trip. Of all the places we've been, it's still our favorite. Booked Ocho Rios, Jamaica for our 10th wedding anniversary in July, 2010.

We're headed to a villa in Tortola for Christmas/New Yrs. We always go to Anguilla but the accommodations cost got so ridiculous we couldn't justify it. We know it's very different than AXA which is better for us--less likely to compare. Tortola works as a jumping off spot for day trips to JVD and VG, etc.
