What are your experiences with Cuban Hotels?
To anyone who's stayed at Cuban hotels, please let me know about your experiences there. Please limit your responses to hotels, as there are other boards dedicated to nightlife, etc. ALSO, THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL SITE, so please don't cludder it with your views on politics and economics. Thanks!

Gary: I stayed at the Hotel Nacional in Havana which was
great: two pools with bar service, room with air-conditioning,
mini bar - in fact everything you would expect from
a four star hotel. One word of warning: the food in
the all-inclusive breakfast was poor, but if you were
prepared to pay a bit more, then it improved massively. The
staff could not have been friendlier.

I highly recommend La Nacional and La Inglaterra in Havana. I also have stayed in Hotel Plaza in Old Havana, but I cannot recommend that hotel. The restaurant staff tried to manipulate my credit card and I got no help from the hotel staff when I discovered this. On the contrary I was treated unpolitely there. But in Nacional and Inglaterra the staff is first class, and so is the food and the service. My general advice is: Use your credit card only in national banks and in the receptions of the hotels. Restaurant-staff cannot be trusted. The cubans try any tricks to get dollar. Theft and begging are widespread, but there is no violence as far as I have heard of and experienced. I highly recommende the towns of Santa Clara and Trinidad. Hire a car and take a trip around this beautiful Island. The south coast is fantastic!
