The advantage of St. Thomas' shopping is that duty free is doubled for the USVI to $1200 per person ($2400 per couple). And some things such as loose stones (as opposed to a piece of jewelry are duty free no matter the cost as are items made in the USVI or original works of art). You also save sales tax. If it is a major purchase such as jewelry, electronics, etc. make sure you shop at home first to get prices and values so you are informed. Some things are good value and most stores will haggle but the savings are sometimes hard to find (especially on electronics - cameras, etc.)! Watches and jewlery are priced well but for example, some colognes you can buy stateside at wholesale clubs cheaper but not the perfumes. So shop wisely! St. Thomas' major shopping area is Charlotte Amalie and another smaller area at the Havensight Mall by the cruise ship docks. Go to www.st-thomas.com/week for the Yellow Book Guide and you will find maps and listings for shopping. Favorites might vary for what you are looking for!

If you are a scotch drinker, the only place you can get the Johnny Walker Blue Label is in the duty-free shops at airports!

Speaking of booze, are only certain types less expensive there (as in rum in PR or Jamaica) or is all booze cheaper? We were wondering whether to BYOB or buy once we get to USVI for our needs while we're there.

Do not BYOB to St. Thomas. Almost ALL top shelf liquors are priced at approx. $10.00 for a liter!

Well, St. Thomas was heaven for me...especially Little Switzerland..I collect an english porcelain line of paperweights and found the most expensive one..that sells i the states for $900.00 at more than 40% off...WOW... Parrot Pop pulled the credit card out...not only that but Michael Doulton from Doulton China was there to sign the piece. Across the street is another shop whose prices were exceptionally higher... If you are looking for digital camera or regular camera equipment..please have prices from the states..you can comparision ship over the internet..know what should come with the package and be prepared to bargain.. As for jewelry, be careful..one woman at our resort bought a five carat tennis bracelet from a very reputable shop.. after getting it back to the resort realized one diamond was bad and returned it...another couple we met got a great deal on a digital camera and things that should go with it..where another young lady bought one without knowing otherthings should have come with it and with our urging was going back to insist on the other things or else would return it.. BTW theLittle Switzerland we shopped at was on the main street..there is one near the ships I understand and one near the flea market...Oh yes, I'm a shopaholic...found the same items in Grand Caymans at ridiculously low prices...the items have appreciated in the UK and US tremendously... just be prepared..
