I know -- impossible. But is there anywhere safe and beautiful we can travel to from Houston, to outside the U.S., for a 5-7 day wonderful vacation? Anywhere?? Ideas? Thanks!

Actually, it's not impossible. We travel out of Houston all the time. We've been to many Islands for less than $3,000 for the both of us including airfare, airport tansfers and an all-incusive hotel.

Look at Mexico. Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. Aruba, Curacao, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, and Grand Cayman.

If you'll give more specifics on what type of vacation your looking for you'll get more responses.

OK, we are an older mother and grown daughter. Do not want to cook oursleves, love beautiful nature. Not into drinking, bars. Touristy events o.k. as we have not been to many places. No condos, need a fairly travelled area but not super crowded. Small quaint hotel is fine. Hope that helps! Thank you!

We are spending 1 night in St Thomas, before our trip home [via DFW]in March.

Island Views Guest House may fit the bill, if you can get good airfare. Owners are nice and helpful over the phone and it has great reviews on tripadvisor. Free breakfast and they will cook you lunch and dinner for a fairly modest pricev- if you want.

Do you need 2 beds? If not, it would cost around $105 to $115 a night.


We are also staying a night in San Juan. We are staying at Coral Princess Inn and we got a good price there too.

I STRONGLY suggest you call these places directly and talk to them and see what kind of prices you can get. I was able to save on both by contacting hotel directly.

Also, start with airfare. That makes all the difference.

you can get quick flights for reasonable prices to grand cayman, cancun or san juan. grand cayman might suit you best. safe, not foreign feeling and things are pretty centrally located.
if you stay in a condo you do Not have to cook. specifically there are quite a few on grand cayman right next to the big hotels.
the prices will depend on when you want to go.
if you need to be sure of the whole price you might look at an all-inclusive. tons of these in or within 1hr. south of cancun.

I would look into either flying to Cancun and taking the ferry to Isla Mujeres (look for the website for Posada del Mar- small but clean and nice hotel) or maybe even going down to the Tulum area after flying to Cancun OR flying to San Juan, PR and taking a Flamenco Air hopper over to Culebra (we liked Villa Boheme but there are other small guest houses). In any of those three places I think you would feel safe, find good local food and interesting sightseeing while spending within your budget. There are good travel forums for Culebra and for Isla- I cannot remember the addresses off the top of my head but you can easily find them on an internet search.

You might want to look into Culebra. Though, technically not "out of the country" it is very different than the mainland USA! More info. can be found at http://culebrablog.com . Beautiful beaches, very laid back island, quirkly little shops & restaurants.

joslin2 - it really isn't necessary to post the same question (albeit worded slightly differently) in 3 differing forums. One will usually do. Now no one has any idea where you want to go or (still) really what your expectations are.

Mexico... Cozumel, Cacun, Cabo, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco all have nonstop flights from Houston available, and are safe and beautiful places. $3000 is plenty for two people for 5-7 days there.

Do you have a travel agent? My husband and I recently purchased 3 round trip tickets from St Louis to Punta Cana for $3,000.00, all inclusive. Everyday a travel agency gets a LAST MINUTE DEAL usually from Apple Vacations come over their emails. They call their clients to let them know what is available. You must act quick because the packages GO FAST. Try that. GOOD LUCK.

Check some on-line booking sites like expedia, travelocity, orbitz, bookit, funjet, apple, cheap caribbean or beachdestinations.com and research destinations and hotels in your price range. Then if you find something your are interested in and have futher questions, then post the specifics. There are many options out there.
