Trip insurance?
HI,
I am getting married and honeymooning in the Caribbean next August, and was wondering about trip insurance for the possibility of hurricanes. How much does this cost, and if you are not going through a travel agent, how/where do you purchase it? How exactly does it work? Thanks!

I'm a real proponent of trip insurance. Whenever I buy it independently, I use Travelguard (www.travelguard.com). The price of insurance is tied to the cost of your trip and your age -- you can check that out on the website. Usually, you purchase it after paying for your trip; some companies give you additional benefits (like waiving pre-existing conditions) if you buy within 7 days of booking your trip.
What the coverage gives you depends on the policy, and they policies often combine coverages. Some examples: Trip cancellation gets you back non-refundable costs if some event (e.g. sickness) prevents you from taking your trip. Trip interruption compensates you for the non-refundable portions of your trip that you missed, and extra expenses you incurred, as a result of an event like weather (e.g. a hurricane). Trip delay compensates you for extra expenses incurred because your trip was delayed through no fault of your own (late flights, missed connections). There are also additional coverages like lost luggage and medical evacuation. Be sure to check the fine print.
Having just successfully collected my 5th travel insurance claim in 10 years, I am a believer and no longer leave the country without it! Ah, the stories I could tell...

I myself just purchased travel insurance too because I am going to Caneel Bay (St. John) this October. I usually don't purchase it but this trip is going to be more expensive then normal, basically because the cost of Caneel! After looking at a few sites such as Insuremytrip.com and quotetravelinsurance.com (both looked good but never used them before) I decided to give AAA a try. After getting a quote I decided to go with AAA, if you have it try checking them out, I got a very good price for what is covered around $200. Definitely do it, it eases the mind! - Susan

Yes, definitely get the trip insurance. It is inexpensive, about $100 or so and if something happens it will be well worth it.
Check out the different resorts too. Some offer free hurricane coverage if a hurricane hits during your stay. Some will even offer free round trip airfare too. Check out the Sandals and Beaches Resort sites.
