Traveling to PR

We'll be travelling to PR next month and, rather than shell out extra cash for a hotel, we've opted to split our time between military lodging in Roos. Roads and Ft. Buchanan. Does anyone have any must see/do advice for these areas? My understanding is that RR is closer to rainforests and such, while Ft. B is located relatively close to San Juan.

Any advice is appreciated -- we're hoping to just get there and "play it by ear", but I would hate to miss out on something wonderful b/c we didn't plan well!

Thanks in advance!

FT. BUCHANAN is about 15 minutes from Old San Juan. It is also close to the two major tourist areas, Condado and Isla Verde if you want to hit the beaches and the gambling casinos. The Caves at Camuy are easier to get to from Ft. Buchanan

Thanks! Based on what I've learned in the last day or so, it seems like most of the things we will want to see/do will be based out of the Ft. Buchanan/San Juan area -- I am just trying to figure out how to divide up our time between the two bases. . . any advice on what we need to see/do (specifics -- ie: eat at X establishment or rent a car from Y)?

Thanks!

Most of the restaurants in Old San Juan are very good. Try to avoid hotel restaurants as they are not as tasty (basically bland), except for Ruth Chris steakhouse, which is an American chain not really tropical food by any means. But we don't have Ruth Chris in New England so we like going to Ruth Chris.

As far as rental car, we've had great luck with Hertz or any of the national chain. We once got a car at Charlie's rentacar (local PR chain), but was disappointed because the a/c broke while we were in middle of our trip and didn't want to go through the hassle of exchanging for another car, so we drove without a/c for a few days. But Hertz, no matter where we go in the Carrib, is always great service and always works!

We visited Roos. Roads Naval Air Base while in PR. I was there only once, but it seemd to be near to nothing. It seemed quite desolated to me. It is in Ceiba. It was about 40 minutes to San Juan. I don't think it was even close to the rain forrest. There is the Ft. in Old San Juan, the Bacardi Rum Factory, and some nice beaches. I stayed in Condado area. Many restaurants in that area.
