Barbara: My wife, daughter and I visited Tortola several summers ago. We loved it, especially renting a 4-wheeled vehicle and island exploring. hairpin curves high atop the ocean with breath-taking views. We stayed at Sebastians by the Sea, but then switched to Long Bay. By all means, rent a vehicle the whole time your there. By all means, take good snorkel, fins and mask. Snorkel Smuggler's Cove and at the campsite's beach...incredible variety of reef fish just offshore in shallow water.I have mucho thick files on places to eat and visit. Email me if you'd like more info. Bob Morton at [email protected]

I stayed at Long Bay in Tortola in March '98 and it hits the nail on the head with regards to what it sounds like you are looking for. If safety is an issue, Tortola is by far the safest location I have ever been to - I definitely felt safer there than in my own backyard! The roads are without a doubt intriguing and it is far worth the money to rent a jeep and explore during your visit. If you need more specifics, don't hesitate to email me.

Barbara,
I think you have selected 2 excellent possibilities with Gradada and Tortola. I would choose Tortola. It very much fits your description of what you want. I'd suggest you check out the villas at bviwelcome.com. We have had the opportunity to really get to know the island over many years. I was doing travel writing for a number of years and can give you some additional info on villas or resorts if you want. Just write at my address above.
JD

Grenada is a larger island with more to see and do if you really want to explore. More plantation, rain forest type areas with little development. Excellent scenery. Good hiking opportunities. People very friendly, perhaps a bit less reserved than Tortolans. A good selections of restaurants, including good local style food - more variety than on Tortola at least as it was a few years ago. Villa selection may not be as good, but more hotels to choose from. Tortola might be more comfortable if you haven't had much experience with Caribbean islands, but I would vote for Grenada.

Perhaps you want Tobago. The flora and fauna is similar to the South American mainland. For villas I would take a serious look at Virgin Gorda down around the Baths. If you want rain forest type vegitation, Grenada will be lusher than Tortola. Also St. John is good in the villa scene. As a private island, Guana Island, BVI offers out of ordinary flora and fauna and it is a delightful place to stay with hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and lovely views. Check them out at http://www.guana.com. Petit St. Vincent is another ideal private island in the Genedines. I would not want a villa in the Caribbean unless it had both food and maid service. If you plan to do your own meals, groceries to US standards will not be found in local markets.
