I would agree that La Luna is a bit more remote in terms of not having the caribbean local flavor. Here are some photos to give you a bit of a visual.

Morne Rouge (Mariposa are the tan buildings). This photo was actually taken on the way to La Luna.

Prickly Bay (Calabash is on the right at the end...can't see it on the photo)

Thank you for the pics mymoosie. The terrain and beach around La Luna looks very nice. Similar colour sand to our southern beaches here in Sydney. I guess we would prefer to be at a location above the sea/beach and therefore are attracted to Maca Bana and La Luna. There is much work to do with our itinerary. While on Grenada we will hire a car also for a day or two to get up to the north and into the hills to the oldest distillery and the different scenery/experiences there.

One year tomorrow is target date to arrive in Grenada. Just wondered if anyone has an opinion of Maca Bana before I make bookings ? Any knowledge of which villa to request would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you all once again for the help you have provided.

If you post over at Tripadvisor Grenada forum there is a user named beau377 who stayed at Maca Bana who will be able to answer your questions. She also wrote a review of the place, and she has photos she can share from her trip this past March.

Thanks again mymoosie, I now appear there with the name of Uniblab. Hope somebody remembers who Uniblab was. I am eagerly reading through the thread on Maca Bana. Maybe it is too remote from the people of Grenada ! Would greatly appreciate a view on this from virginia and ejcrowe too if they know of Maca Bana.

Hello All Grenada Fans.

I have just locked in the frequent flyer booking to arrive early next July, so I have a final request for your assistance regarding accomodation.

The choice is La Luna or Maca Bana.

Any views or critical comparison would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again.

Hello again! I'm so glad that you've decided on Grenada, but I may not be much help in your decision making department. I very specifically chose La Luna over Maca Bana because of a gut reaction before my vacation, and then while I was on island, everything I saw about either one reinforced my decision. I suspect that anybody who prefers Maca Bana would say the same thing about their choice, as the two are pretty radically different. Just keep in mind that my opinion is just that, as in the case of those who proselytize for Maca Bana or any other hotel/resort/island/etc.

La Luna is very rustic romantic. Casual and laid back in feel that somewhat belie their price. When you're there, you KNOW you're on a tropical island and the architecture reflects it, from the thatched roofs everywhere, to the open air bathrooms, to the French doors in the bedroom that can be thrown wide open during the day to let in the sea breezes and the perfumed air. These are all things that appeal to me--I like having a sense of place, a sense of escape, and La Luna provides that in spades.

But there are drawbacks, of course, depending on your travel style. Open air bathrooms, which I happen to love, mean that you're sharing your space with lizards or other small critters. To me they just reinforce that yes, I am traveling, yes I'm experiencing something new and wonderful and different from home. To others, though, open air bathrooms might just reinforce their dislike of bugs and wee beasties.

I also felt that Maca Bana was a little too pristine. Not quite sterile, that's too strong a word. But despite it's proximity to a very nice restaurant and beach with pretty good snorkeling relative to the island, nothing really called to me from Maca Bana the way it did with La Luna. You know how it is. Once I arrived on island I didn't see anything that changed my mind about that.

Do keep in mind that La Luna, while not having any Keep Out signs posted per se, is down a very rough, rutted, occasionally one-lane road. Those who like La Luna would call it secluded and its detractors would call it isolated.

Both places are a little off the beaten path, so I wouldn't let location be a major determining factor, unless you're planning to eat several meals at one or the other of the affiliated restaurants. La Luna has a small refrigerator in the rooms but Maca Bana is fully self-catering, so a large part depends on how much of your own cooking you'd like to do.

Maca Bana is perfectly lovely, but it just wasn't for me in the same way that La Luna was. Please let me know if you have specific questions you'd like me to answer for you.

One minor point in reference to an earlier post on this thread. Tobago is know primarily for its scuba diving, not for its snorkeling. There is snorkeling here and there but it's not a standout in that regard.

The outflow from Venezuela's Orinoco River streams past Trinidad and Tobago. This outflow makes for great feeding conditions and draws all kinds of sea life. But the sediment makes for less than crystal clear water.
