We rented a villa in Red Hook called Fantasia. It was a 2 1/2 million dollar house with 7000 sq. ft. Before we decided on this property we were going to stay at Gossamer Winds. Nothing compares to this place views of St. John, Little St. James (floor to ceiling windows all around the villa). Our bedroom was called the Rock Room, Behind our bed was real boulders. The shower had a huge rock in it. Staying at this villa is a fantasy.Look for it's web site, it's something like www.villafantasia.com.

My husband and I stayed in Villa Papillon this past January and enjoyed it immensely. It was very well appointed, tastefully decorated, spotless, with an incredible view and in the gated community of Peterborg Estates. The pictures on the net are a true representation. It is a terrific home. We did a minimum of sightseeing so that most of our time was spent on the property. The property manager lives in an extremely discreet apartment under the house (you don't know it's there until you are told! She makes certain that the pool is clean and is always ready to share information (i.e., called one night to tell us of the impending eclipse). Otherwise, she stays out of sight.
I have not stayed in the other houses but considered Fantasia along with Villa Papillon. The pictures on the net looked impressive and Laurie has confirmed it. My only comment has to do with location (and perhaps Laurie can assist here also). Fantasia overlooks the Red Hook Marina in a reasonably well populated area. For us, I preferred not to overlook a busy marina. Obviously, this is personal choice. VP looked out to sea with a small uninhabited island directly in front of the villa. St. John could be seen in the distance looking to your right as you stand looking out to sea from either the deck, living room or master bedroom.
We saw only a couple of boats go by during the entire week.
By the way the url for Fantasia is www.fantasiavi.com.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your vacation.

Just to let you know we saw some boats everyday and a couple of jet skiers. But it certainly didn't take away from the beauty of the villa or the views of all BVI. St. John or Little James Island. In fact one of the bedroom suites bathroom shower and tub was all glass to look out while your taking a shower!

Thanks Laurie and Pamela.......
Tried unsuccessfully to reserve either of the two. Ended booking Beausoliel. I've put the cart before the horse this year and made travel plans before doing my homework. Maybe you can help me. Wanted to stay in Charlotte Amelia a few days to shop, dine out, see the sights, etc., before heading for the villa. Because we wanted to avoid the big hotels, our agent suggested the Galleon House. It appeared a little too inexpensive. But he assured us he had stayed there and it would be fine.
Also, the travel books(Fodor's 2000, Whitman's '96, Birnbaum's '97) from the public library, while agreeing St. Thomas is an island paradise, suggest that one has to be extremely careful because of "an increase in crime... especially the recent wave of violence in St. Thomas." We are really in need of a relaxing trip and certainly didn't intend to end up somewhere having to be fearful of our every move. Any advice?
Thanks!

Nikki,
No need to worry, although you don't want to be hanging out in a dark alley at night. We stayed at Black Beard's Castle a couple years ago and at night we didn't walk ,we just used our car. If you like to shop for jewelry stop in at Cardow's. Have a great vacation!

Agree completely with Laurie. I doubt very much that it is any worse than anywhere else. Just behave sensibly. We left our engagement rings and watches at home on our first trip due to some advice we received. Next trip we will be wearing them.
Sounds as if the house that you leased is one that is located on St. John (there is a Beausoleil there). If that is the case, you will not regret your "planning". We stayed on St. Thomas on our first trip but we have reservations for St. John for next year. If that is the case, you will feel even safer in St. John.
Enjoy your trip--
