St. Thomas hotels?

We'll be spending 2 nights on STT this October on our way to St. John. Any suggestions for a moderately priced (<$100/night) hotel? Must have all the standard amenities (i.e. A/C, TV, private bath, etc.), be located in a safe part of town and be walking distance to shops, restaurants, etc. Ideally, we'd prefer something w/ a balcony and a nice view. Right now we're considering The Green Iguana and Galleon House. Has anyone stayed at either of these places? Are there other good options that we're missing? Anywhere that you'd stay away from?

I would stay away from the Admiral's Inn.

Any hotel in St. Thomas that has a water view and has immediate walking distance to town and moderate in price denotes "IN A BAD AREA"- ie.DRUGS. <BR>Just beware- the Galleon House and Admirals House are both in this iffy area--

You might want to check www.crystalpalaceusvi.com. Don't know if it fits your requirements but Ron is a great host! It is a quick walk to shopping, Virgilio's but I would not walk in Town at nite. Some people seem content with the Windward Passage/Holiday Inn right on the waterfront which is more of a "traditional" hotel and might give you the amenities you are looking for. The Green Iguana is adjacent to BlackBeard's and not an easy walk to shops, etc. but you do have the use of the pool there and the good restaurant.

Oh! what was I thinking ... you did say October! Many of the resorts do have very inexpensive rates due to the time of year. You might want to check the rates and specials. Go to the aol board on STT/STJ and someone just booked Sapphire for not much more than what you want to pay. Not near Town but near Red Hook for good dining options, a great beach and near the Red Hook ferry for your transfer to STJ.
