If you do a search, you will find a trip report from Kay who stayed there -- she enjoyed it.

I just returned from the Hyatt on 12/9/00. It is a beautiful hotel with a stunning beach on the bay. The staff is very friendly and the food is excellent. You will not be disappointed.

Ted - I would love to hear more about your stay at the Hyatt. I will be staying there in April. Thanks.

Lori,
First, the hotel is new, luxurious, and built for 80 million. From the amazing lobby, to the lush grounds, this really is a 5-star hotel at a 4.5 star cost. It has it's own power generator (key during storms). The pools are beautiful. The hotel really did scoop the best hotel workers from the island. They go out of their way to help you.
It's location is almost the northern tip of the island in Rodney bay. Only 20 minutes from the airport and Castries but far enough away so you can relax. Be SURE to land in Castries so you can avoid the crazy 1.5 hour mountain drive from the south.
The food is trully excellent but a little pricey. We found that two meals per day was still half of what you pay for food at an all-inclusive.
Now, I'm not a big fan of staying in remote locations, like Jalouise Hilton or Anse-whatever, so I loved this hotel. It even has it's own dock, so if you want to take a day cruise, you don't have to travel to another location.

Enjoy!

Thanks Ted! Yes, I am landing in Vigie airport, so I will avoid that long trip from the South. I don't know if you are into snorkeling, but I was interested to know if there is any good snorkeling at the Hyatt or in the Northern part of St. Lucia? Did you eat at the hotel mostly, or travel elsewhere for meals? Any excursions you recommend? Any recommendations for things to do with two 12 year old boys? Thanks again for all your help! Lori

Lori,
the snorkeling is fine everwhere, just avoid the Atlantic side.
Take a day boat trip to the southern part of the island where you will stop and take a mini hike to see a volcano.
Also, trek a short distance to the fort at the peak near the hotel.
The food at the hotel is excellent. About $35-50 per 2 people. Not bad price compared to other hotels of the Hyatt's caliber. Also try JJ's in Castries for cheap but great local food.
Enjoy!

Can anyone help me out with price guidelines for the Hyatt and Jalousie Hilton. Hyatt was quoting a little over $400 per night (in season - February) for an ocean view without any meal plan. Hilton was quoting about $330 for a mountain view villa without a meal plan. Does this sound reasonable or am I overpaying? I wanted to split my trip between both locations.

St. Lucia is a Catholic island, and prohibits nude and topless sunbathing. All beaches are public -- no private beaches, although water taxis can take you to some that are very isolated where no one is around.

I noticed there were some pics of the St. Lucia Hyatt's beach in Fitness magazine. It looks like beautiful white sand and crystal clear turquoise water. I was under the impression that St.Lucia is darker sand with dark blue water. Can someone clarify?

I simply cannot say enough good things about the Hyatt. The service was the best I have ever experienced and you will not come across a more genuinely kind and helpful staff. They really go the extra mile to make sure you're happy.

The resort facilities are wonderful down to the last detail. The beautiful open air lobby with the breezes off the bay make you feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. The beaches are very well groomed and the water is crystal clear. The food was delicious and far more affordable than I expected. Three different restaurants to choose from and they satisfied my every craving.

The landscaping is fantastic. Don't miss the oceanside views. I spent many hours on the balcony of my oceanside room look out over the gardens to the white capping waves on the Atlantic side. Perfectly tranquil.

You can do everything or nothing at the Hyatt. The concierge desk and watersports office helped us to rent a car for a day, take a catamaran tour of the island (Endless Summer. A "MUST DO.") and charter a private sail to Martinique. The even directed us to the local church for Easter service.

By the time we left, we had mad many friends--both with other guests and with the staff. Truly wonderful people.

The Hyatt is the best of St. Lucia if you are looking for a beach vacation. Some other resorts in the South (Ladera, Anse Chastenet) may have more dramatically beautiful scenery (rain forests, the Pitons) and would be good for a secluded romantic getaway. But I will definitly go back to the Hyatt--without a doubt.

You will find the waters of Rodney Bay more turquoise than most spots on St Lucia. The sand at Rodney Bay is whiter and this causes the greener waters. You were absolutely correct though that most of the waters around St Lucia are a deeper blue and this is due to all the dark volcanic sand. You will like Rodney Bay and the closeness of the Hyatt to Pigeon Island park is a plus. I must admit it was hard for me to see the Hyatt had been built on such a beautiful stretch of the causeway as we loved it before. But progress for St Lucia is always good. They love tourists and it is a wonderful destination. Drop by Rendezvous near the Vigie airport and see how you like it! A great spot and we have been twice and will go back. Different than the Hyatt it is more of a local feel. Enjoy your trip! Anyplace on St Lucia is a great place to be!
