St. John - need suggestions on where to stay !!?!

Help, my husband and I are planning a trip to St. John in late April/early May. We like the pampering that a large hotel has to offer (i.e. daily maid service, pool, beach, food). The Westin and Canel Bay look beautiful but are SO expensive. Any suggestions? We are looking into Gallows Point but don't know too much about it. Thanks for your help.

Gallows Point is nice. I believe others seeing your post will be responding positively on Gallows Point soon. It is on the harbour peninsular facing the ocean. It has a small pool and a rocky beach which has good snorkeling. There is an independent restaurant on the property called Ellington's that offers great dining with an awesome very of the ocean and neighboring island St. Thomas. It is only a 5 min walk to the town of Cruz Bay. Call 1-340-776-6434 and ask for Res. Manager Marcy for rates and brochure.
MY WIFE AND I HAVE STAYED AT GALLOWS POINT TWICE. VERY NICE, BUT THERE ARE SEVERAL CHOICES TO RENT..ON SITE AND THERE IS ANOTHER GENTLEMEN WHO CONTROLS 6-8 UNITS THAT ARE A BIT NICER. TRY TO GET A UNIT AWAY FROM CRUZ BAY AS SOMETIMES THE MUSIC FROM TOWN CARRIES OUT TO GALLOWS POINT. MY WIFE AND I BOTH SCUBA, BUT AFTER TWO DAYS OF DIVING OPTED TO GO WITH THE SNORKLING AT THE MANY BEAUTIFUL BEACHES...DIVING WAS DISAPPOINTING. WE WALKED INTO TOWN EACH NIGHT FOR DINNER. ONE RESTUARANT (I CANNOT REMEMBER THE NAME) IS MID ISLAND ON HILL OVERLOOKING bvi WITH GREAT VIEW. RESTAURANT GOOD, BUT PRICY. WE ENJOYED OUTSELVES IMMENSELY.
My husband & I are going to St. John in Jan. We are renting a house. There are many vacational rentals available.....some have swimming pools, too. We are staying in the Coral Bay area.

Windspree Vacation Rentals are the company we used. They are on the net, so you can look at many properties that are available.

It's just another option to consider. We like the privacy of a home!

My boyfriend and I loved the Westin hotel. It was lovely and newly renovated. It sits in its own cove and has all types of amenities including shops, boats, watersports, pool. We checked out Caneel Bay also. I liked it but my boyfriend thought it was too stuffy and not as nice as the Westin. Have fun! We found some great snorkeling too.

My husband and I stayed at Gallows Point a month ago and enjoyed it very much. There are approx 15 four unit blgds., 2 units up, 2 down. Depending on you needs, be aware that the upper units have loft bedrooms and no A/C. The lower units are on one level and have A/C in the bedroom. We found the upper unit (no A/C) to be much too hot, and we're used to heat - we've lived in far south Florida for many years. We moved to a lower unit, 3B. This bldg. is away from the, possibly, noisy bay side. I think this bldg has the best views because of the staggered placement. Cruz Bay is a 5 min walk. For very casual dining, don't miss Uncle Joe's. It's a Bar B Q place (no sign, no visible name) across the street from the Post Office. Ask anyone for directions. Be sure to say Good Morning (Afternoon, etc.) to everyone,(store clerks, strangers you pass on the street, etc.) before you ask for directions or anything. This small courtesy shown to the residents of St John goes a long way in making your stay as a tourist much more pleasant. E-mail me direct if I can help further. You will enjoy St John and we haven't even talked about the magnificent beaches!

Forgot to mention that Gallows Point gives a 10% discount to AAA members and a 20% discount to AARP members. You must show your card to get the discount.
