Your choices are really different--resort vs. private villa--so it really depends on your preferences, tastes. You can do a search on my name and st. croix and you can read my Feb. '06 trip report from the Buccaneer. Villa Dawn looks beautiful but is in a more remote, quiet area of the island. A car would be a must.
Be careful about hurricane season, I would think. Will you get deposits back if a storm hits? What will either spot do for you if you get caught there during a hurricane? Always good to get that info in advance.
St. Croix is great fun....enjoy whatever you decide to do.

Ziggy--
We are all set to go back to STX and the Buccaneer next February. Just finalized the frequent flyer flights over the weekend (which is no easy feat these days). Will stay in the same room with the same friends next door! We know many think we are boring to return for our eighth trip but it's hard to describe the importance of this annual sojourn to our little family. and we are fortunate to travel elsewhere during the year (working on a California trip for August--lots of posts over on that forum!).
Thanks for your kind words. Have "met" so many nice people on this board. If you ever want some advice on travelling to our National Parks with your kids, let me know. That has been a joy for our family!

We stay at the Carambola - it's in a lovely location, but away from town. We always rent a car so we can explore the entire island. I also suggest Buck Island - we went with Mile Mark and the boat leaves from the pier in Christiansted. Be sure to eat at Kendrick's for a wonderful, romantic meall. The restaurant at the Carambola Golf Course is also excellent - they're open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
