snakes & hurricanes in St. John

My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon on St. John (late Oct. '04). I have two questions:

1. Are there any snakes on St. John? My wife-to-be is absolutely terrified of them, to the point that a sighting would just about ruin the week.

2. How would you rate our chances of bad weather between Oct. 16 - 31? A little rain is not so bad, but I certainly don't want to spend the whole time indoors.

Thanks in advance!

1. didn't see any snakes when we were there for a week in june. do you guys plan to hike? we didn't, so don't know if that made the difference.
2. can't answer that one since we were there during month of june.

October in that part of the caribbean is hurricane season - so predicting the weather is virtually impossible.

We were on St. John for two weeks from 10/26/03-11/09/03. Saw no snakes-doesn't mean they wren't there. There are mongoose on St. John which may help the snake situation.

While the time period that you are looking at is on the end of the hurricane season it is possible to have one. I would think it would be low risk. You will probably experience some restaurant closings ( low season ) but still have a good choice.

I have see many mongoose, which are snake killers, on St. John. In my five visits, I have never seen a snake In addition, being a city girl with a huge fear of snakes who moved to the country in the U.S., I have since learned tha most snakes fear humans, and do everything to veer from their paths, and attack only when they feel threatened.

Hope this helps.

We didn't see any snakes but those little lizards, geckos, make you jump when they scurry around, you get use to them.
A few years ago, when we visited, our original vacation week was beginning of October but a destructive hurricane came through and we had to reschedule to the week after Thanksgiving. So you may want to have a last minute back up destination.
It is a beautiful quiet island, fun to explore.
