shore fishing from St. John?
Hi,
Has anyone wet a line from shore at any of the St. John Beaches? Are there any beaches known for their fishing?
I'll also be on Virgin gorda for afew days and wondering the same thing. Don't have the $$ for a charter.
Thanks!

You don't fish in the park waters.
They are protected. While I have seen some people fishing at Cinnamon bay.. I find it ridiculous.. and it interferes with the snorkelers trying to enjoy the beauty of the reefs. If you want to fish, schedule a charter.

calm down. I'm not looking at slinging a lure at anyone. It's a big island. I'm sure there are plenty of areas where your precious behind won't have to worry about "scoundrel fishermen" such as myself.
Anyone have anything "constructive" to add?
Thanks,

Try posing this question at www.usvi-on-line.com (Travel Forum) for St. John and at www.traveltalkonline.com (BVI bulletin board) for Virgin Gorda.
I would think there is enough unused shoreline between the beaches, somewhere, to cast a line without snagging a tourist. When you arrive on St. John you can easily pick up a map showing the park boundaries.

sharky23,
I am sorry that I offended you. I apologize. I know I came off with "attitude". You seldom see fishing from shore on STJ... mostly because, I the fish near shore are usually small..and as I said, you are not to fish in the park waters - most beaches on the island are in park waters. I had a bad experience once while trying to snorkel and a shore fisherman was nearby despite being warned by camp staff.. he was very inconsiderate. I know not all fishermen are this way. You have a right to enjoy fishing. I am very passionate about the park, and I have seen a lot of damage done in park waters over the last decade. Please forgive me for my abrupt comments.
Friends of ours used "bite me" charters - you may want to try them... the charter ran around $800 however, if you find a day when other folks are chartering as well, you can cut your costs. The most commonly caught fish according to the captian is wahoo.. and you don't get to keep the fish.

Mewmon, I know you are passionate about the Park, and I appreciate that very much. I, too, am a conservationist, but fishing is allowed in the National Park, just not in swimming areas nor Trunk/Jumbie Bays. Please see: http://www.nps.gov/viis/rules.htm
