Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

We are visiting the D.R. in early December and will be staying in Santo Domingo for a few nights before continuing on to Punta Cana. Can anyone suggest a hotel in the Colonial District? Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Palacio, Hostal Nicolas Nader or Hostal Nicolas de Ovando?

Also, please suggest good Santo Domingo restaurants!

Try La Bahia along the waterfront for the greatest seafood—Santo Domingo favorite vacation spot of ours....

The Palacio is the best of the three you mentioned. It's small and well managed. It's on a side-steet just a block off El Conde, the closed-to-traffic shopping street. Plenty of restaurants and cafes. The owner/manager will direct to good ones.

Joe Harkins
Travel The Net
http://www.travelthe.net
How is the Nicolas Nader?...Also, are you aware of any alternatives to renting a car in order to get out to Punta Cana?

The Punta Cana Airport is served by American Eagle (div of AA). The PC terminal is one of the most interesting you'll ever see anywhere. The exterior and interior walls use locally excavated coral, complete with embedded shells and fossils. The long building is roofed with hand-woven thatch.

I recommend strongly against renting a car and driving in the DR. You'll be better off with a driver who has his own car. Rentals in the DR are notorious for poorly maintained vehicles plus charge-backs for dings and dents that came with the car. All of that is beside the point that the roads are especially dangerous for non-local drivers.

Joe Harkins
Travel The Net
http://www.travelthe.net

Joe,

Thanks for the tip. We've actually heard that renting a car is not advisable from several sources. However, we don't want to fly from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana because we don't want to miss the opportunity to explore (albeit briefly) the area enroute. Are drivers available for hire for such a long trip, how much would it cost, and how would we find one to hire?
