Riu in Aruba

Going to Aruba for the first time in early June...currently booked at the Riu....reading many negative reviews. Is there anyone that has been to the Riu, returned to Aruba and stayed elsewhere? And if so, was it a better choice?
I am definitely ok with the Riu not being a perfect place, I just want to make sure it will be worth my money. I keep hearing how hard the beds are, the smell of old, mildew rooms, the frustration of getting a hut by the ocean (unless you are up by 7:00 am), the same with a chair by the pool, long line to get reservations for dinner (and sometimes being told the 6:30 slot is full), food just ok, etc. Would love a person that can give me a comparison. Thanks.

I haven't stayed at the Riu but I did stay next door at the Radisson and I highly recommend it. The hotel was drop dead gorgeous and we had a sleep number bed that was very comfy. Is there any way you could do the Radisson instead? I booked my room through Player's Choice and they got us a deal with free breakfast, free airport transfers and a $200 beverage credit.

Please give it some thought if you do not get the info you need at the Riu.

if you want an all-inclusive - check out Divi All Inclusive or Tamarijn.....let me say I've never been - but due to certain circumstances - will be going to an all inclusive next year.....these 2 places do not get bad reviews....yes - they say they are a tad older...but all they get is repeat business - check out the reviews on Trip Advisor.....I'm amazed at their repeat business...the pros seam to be the beach - at the Tamarijn - all rooms are ocean front.....but they are right next door to eachother - I guess there are many restaurants to choose from - a casino - shopping - and this glorius beach! Many people will say not to do all inclusives in Aruba - as there are many fine restaurants.....in my case - my 80 year old Mom takes her daughters every year - and just doesn't want any fuss - hence - I am seriously considering either of these 2 places.....again - check out Trip Advisor....all they say is the bathrooms need updating - and I've read that renovation is taking place. Good Luck! If you go - please let us know how it goes!

BellaClaire, I have to agree with those who recommend against all inclusives. I can understand why an elderly person would appreciate the convenience of all inclusive, however the great restaurants in Aruba were half the fun for us. But of course it's a matter of personal preference.

Have not stayed at the RIU in Aruba, but did in Jamaica. The reservation system is the same for all of their hotels and it sucks. I would hesitate to stay at another RIU do that fact alone, and the food was terrible. Worst of the 14 AI resorts we have stayed in.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Aruba on their AI plan. The buffet food was iffy and we never got a reservation for the ala cart restuarant or a papala on the beach because we refused to get up that early in the morning to stand in line. We used the AI for breakfast, lunch and drinks and went out for dinners. It worked for us. If we ever get back to Aruba, I would strongly consider the Radisson due their drink plan and continue to eat meals out. The restuarant selection in Aruba is just so numerous.

I hear ya P_M in my case - it's all about our Mom - and what is most convenient for her.....and while 3 of us sisters will be biting our tongue in not venturing out to experience the restaurants in AUA.....we focus on our time together with our Mom- so the Divi/Tamarijn are located on a great beach (every review I read says this)...the food gets good review - The Red Parrot for example....the casino is in walking distance - etc. etc. and it's zero stress for Mom - no taxis - no decisions - just relaxation!!!! I travel for a living...so I totally get where you are coming from...I'd much rather venture out and explore....except this one trip we do every year with her!

I understand completely BellaClaire. My mom is a little younger than yours but when we travel I do what is necessary to make the trip easier for her. Your hotel does sound very nice if all-inclusive is a priority.
