Restaurants to avoid on St Thom

Does anyone have any stinkers absolutely not to go to? Ok, I'll take some to go to as well, since I'm sure some of you will offer.

Did not care for J J's Tex Mex or Uncle Joes Ribs. Asolare, Stone Terrace The Fish Trap are great.
Sogo's Restaurant also is baaaaad. This of course is my own opinion, cause if these retaurants were really that bad they would not be around. So some people find these places appealing. Good luck and good eating!

Good eatin', good post but wrong island! LOL You just listed places on St. John. Asolare is loved by many but the fusion, tower concept I don't care for. Great views! Paradiso is one I avoid but same owners as Asolare, Chateaux Bordeaux (one of my favs) and Old Stone Farm House on STT (my fav). Fish Trap is not on my list of places to go but then neither is Lime Inn nor shrimp nite but I would pick Lime Inn over Fish Trap anyday if that were the only two choices! Joe uses Open Pit bbq sauce and an informed source has witnessed and verified that! (Have never eaten the ribs so don't have a clue if they are good or not!). And thankfully Pusser's closed so now that's one place that doesn't need a "warning." Cafe Wahoo there now and is good! I know one place I would NEVER go back to on STT is SeaGrape at Sapphire and maybe that's unfair since it's been lots of years but it was soooo bad ... ketchup bottles on the table, a noisy video room next to the dining room with lots of noise. Hotel 1829 wouldn't find me there either but now with new staff heard it is finally turning around back to when it was wonderful but still no souffles (a St. Thomas tradition at 1829) on the menu! I would NOT return to Lindy's. Very expensive, overpriced medicore food but glorious views.

We found a gem of a place in St. Thomas towards the end of our recent vacation and wish we'd found it sooner - the Toad and Tart Pub near the Renaissance resort on the east end. It's an English pub and we had the best food really. Went to a lot of different restaurants (Lime Inn on St. John was good but very crowded and Raffles in St. Thomas was fabulous fine dining) but this pub was just wonderful. Very comfortable place and the owner, Anna, is really charming. She does all the cooking and we had out of this world prime rib on a Saturday and to die for fish and chips on Friday. Really good and varied menu and the prices are extremely reasonable in comparison to the other places we went to. She doesn't do much advertising and we just happened to drive by one day and gave it a try. Like I said, wish we'd found it earlier as we probably would have been there every night! As far as bad dining, we didn't really dislike anywhere much although we'd avoid in future some of the more busy tourist places as the food was pretty mediocre there. Anyway, enjoy your trip. We'll be back there next year and will definitely be back at the Toad and Tart!

Jim, so glad you mentioned the Toad and the Tart. When I was mentioning the Roti place that's nearby in the other thread "Elysian, Beach Club, ...," I was thinking of it but since I haven't tried it, I always hesitate to mention it. Always hear good things about it tho and it usually is on the list to try when we go ... just never have enuf nites!

Thanks for the comments about the Toad and Tart. I have always been tempted to go there, but dining companions have never been agreeable. There's been a coupon in the Rotary Book, but that wasn't enough of a lure for my friends, who have felt the area and the outward appearance wasn't appealing. (Yes, I must admit, I hang with dining snobs). I have printed out your post and will bring it with me next time. Thanks again for your post. It is the very first one I have seen on any board for this restaurant.

Hi There,

Like Gelopee I have thought about stopping and Toad and Tart for the past couple of years but have never quite made it there. I've been across the street at Romano's and down the street at Eunices'/Sandra's/Glenda's. Got to try this place next visit.

Places I wouldn't go back to on STT are: Any restaurant that has a seafood buffet. Keeping seafood out of refrigeration in the heat of the tropics has never made any sense to me.

Agree with Karen about Lindy's... for the money they want, there are a lot of places on STT with much better food. Same with SeaGrape at Sapphire....it's just OK...but with all the great restaurants around, try another place.

I've also never quite figured out the fascination with Hard Rock on STT....why go to some place that you can go to back home...kind of like heading all the way to the USVI so you can hit a Denny's or Mickey Dee's...buy the souvenirs there but eat somewhere else.

Absolutely agree with Jim about ToadandTart. We lucked on to it by chance after driving by and seeing the sign outside for the roast duck (I think that was the Thursday special) and we stopped in quickly and then returned for dinner. It was so good and we were made to feel so warmly welcome. Be careful about following the Fodors rants and raves because they're hopelessly outdated. We're very happy to give the toad four thumbs up and equally pleased that someone has finally mentioned this great place! Where not to go? The supposed Irish pub on the east end doesn't do justice to good food (they don't even use real potatoes!) and the Caribbean Saloon's prime rib doesn't hold a candle to the ToadandTart's Saturday night prime which we went back for! Raffles was great for fine dining and the prices weren't as high as we'd been led to believe. Chef Patrick's food was awesome and the place, which is now under new ownership, looks beautiful.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't want them to stop, just wanted everyone to know they are appreciated.
ps. I notice that not many leave their actual email on these bb's. Am I just too honest for my own good?

Since we are on the subject of restaurants: What restaurants serve conch? I believe I have seen it in a soup there but that is about all.
