Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

I am looking for any information on travel to the the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana specifically. I am looking at traveling to the newly built all-inclusive resort, Natura Park, in Feb '98. Any information would be helpful and appreciated!

Ann - I'm looking for info on Punta Cana also. From all the reading of topics it looks like the D.R. is not a popular spot. I'll be checking here often to see what, if anything is going on. My sister is planning on traveling there in Jan. '98, just ahead of her. I'll be waiting to see what she tells me and I'll definitely get back to you!

We have been to Punta Cana twice and found it to be beautiful. The beaches are non-stop and we walked for hours. You can stop in at any one of the resorts for lunch, use the beach, and return to your hotel.

There is not a lot of activity at the resorts, gambling and discos are most popular, but you will not find a more relaxing vacation.

Tours are good, Higuey was very interesting and we learned a lot about the country. Being a third world country is an eye opener but I strongly recommend getting out for at least one tour.

The resorts and beaches at Punta Cana can not be beat. There are a lot of Germans, Italians, Spanish and Argentinians vacationing there and most know English. Very interesting - like going abroad.

The people are very friendly if you speak to them. They love Americans and enjoy knowing about us. The Dominicans speak at least 2-3 languages, which is more than I can say about Americans.

Restaurants are pretty scarce but the food is "good" at most of the resorts.

We love the Dominican Republic - have been there four times and will go again in 1998.

I have found a great travel homepage on Dominican Republic. Try www.computan.on.ca/
~pdowney/travel.html We are also going there in Jan. 98 to Luperon Beach Resort near Puerta Plata. Have fun.

Just returned from Luperon Beach Resort in November. Resort is gorgeous - very clean and lot's of activities. However, we were the ONLY Americans out of about 400 people. Lot's of German and British charters with very rude, unfriendly folks. The food , which is average at best, becomes really boring after about 3 days of the same thing. Also, not many accommodations made for non-smokers. Some of the staff, espcially bartenders and dining room help were not overly friendly either. We would hesitate to recommend this resort for those reasons even though the resort itself is great. (This was our second trip to DR)

Just got back from Punta Cana. The beaches are the prettiest around if that's all your looking for. There isn't anything outsided of the resorts. The closest city is Higuey, which by the way is filthy is full of poverty. I know theres poverty on a lot of islands but this was too much. Burning trash in the streets. The snorkeling isn't that great!!! They don't promote shopping. Theres a market on the beach by Bavarro Palace. They seem to cater to europeans (germans) who by the way are rude, rude, rude. Not much english spoken. Would look into another destination. Remember, this is only my opinion. (don't want to upset anyone!)
