I have Verizon Wireless and i know my phone will be totally useless while in Antigua. The phone company in Antigua has a monopoly on phone service. You may want to check w/ your service provider.
I was told you can buy a phone card while in Antigua, but I would assume the price is quite high.

Thks Foley for update. We learned of two options on recent trip. One is to purchase an international sim card. You can do this there or at your home base prior to leaving for Antigua which is is easly inserted into phone. SIM card there cost $50us. Then of course one must confirm if SIM card is compatible with personal phone and/or then rent or buy a cell phone there if need. SIM card is reuseable / reloadable for future use. Communication was amazingly very clear. The other option is to purchase a prepaid phone card from the local wireless co. The trick with that is in locating phones that actually use these electronic cards. The service on this type of calling card is perfectly clear also. (cards that offer 800# service do not work for the most part on island) Hope this helps.

If you travel a lot you may find it would be worthwhile to invest in a GSM phone (make sure it is unlocked!) and then just buy a SIM card at your island destination. We picked up a quad-band GSM phone on eBay for about $100 and used it when we went to Turks & Caicos, and also Antigua. We didn't need anything fancy, just a phone in case of emergencies.
