Our Lucaya

My husband and I recently went to this newly redone resort on Grand Bahama Island with our 5 year old daughter. I wanted to post some info as I received some on this "board" prior to our trip.
The grounds were VERY nice, however we did not find the service to be what everyone else has been saying. We live in South Florida and travel within the state quite often and dine out frequently. I found the service not great considering how nice looking the resort was.
When my husband checked in, we were not given the info on the activity schedule for the adults or for the kids, nor were we supplied with the cards you need to charge drinks and food to the room. They are touting this as this "great" service oriented place and we did not have that experience. Also, the first evening when we tried to make a local phone call, the phone was not working. When we called the front desk about it, my husband said the girl was rude and not very helpful about getting our line turned on. This to me, was ridiculous!
We only ate at the resort one night. (we didn't eat there much as it was very pricey and all the food was "Americanized"--after all, we didn't go away to an island to have hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza)I understand if you want to appeal to families you need to supply good "kid" food, but we have excellent restaurants in our area and wanted seafood and some Bahamian food!
Regarding the room, we stayed in the "older" part of the resort where they seemed to put most of the families with young children as it was closest to the large swimming pool, the "Camp Lucaya" and the water slide. (oh and the water slide is SO high and scary, they wouldn't even allow my 5 year old on it!--what is the purpose of the slide if the younger ones can't enjoy it too??!!)
OK, so here are the good points (in my opinion, of course!) The part of the resort called "Lighthouse Point" is lovely, much more subdued and the rooms/suites are brand new and the nicest. (the high rise building was lovely too, but 7 stories was a bit much) The pina coladas and the mud slides were worth the $6 a pop--they were great!
The room we had was very clean and well maintained--plenty of towels and the rooms were made up very promptly every morning.
So after all this would I return? No--there are much nicer places to go in the Caribbean with much better food and better service.
Hope this helps some people who are considering this trip.

Jean,
I feel compelled to dispute some obvious misstatements in your information on Our Lucaya. If you were there recently, meaning after 01 December 2000, Reef Village is ALL all-inclusive, so I assume you must have been on that plan. It stinks, but that's all they have at Reef Village. If the only place you ate was there your complaints about "americanized" food might ring true. However, you either have ignored or chosen to omit Willy Broadleaf's at Breaker's Cay (the one you describe incorrectly as a 7 story high rise, it's ten), which serves buffet food and has a menu serving different foods from a different part of the world every day. You also omitted Churchhill's Chop Shop, in the Manor House. An outstanding steak house and serving Bahamian seafood. Portobello's at Lighthouse Point, an excellent Italian restaurant. I don't know what Irie's features on their menu, because they weren't open when we were there in February. You also "forgot" China Beach, with a menu consisting almost exclusively of Asian food and Bahamian cuisine (in fact, they set the tables with chopsticks). Yes, it costs more than in the U.S., and yes the service is slow in some of them, but when we ate at Churchhill's it was extremely efficient, friendly and very fast service. The food was also outstanding. You got stuck at Reef Village, and they have a long way to go to turn that "partially-exclusive" portion of the resort around, but it isn't fair to condemn the entire resort because you didn't like that part of it, nor to ignore a wealth of menu choices from all over the world. I will also add that the slowness of service in the Bahamas in general is no better or worse than anyplace we've been in the entire Caribbean (and that includes Aruba, St. Martin, St. Johns, St. Thomas, Barbardos, and others). When you go to the Caribbean, if you aren't prepared to be laid back and not worry about time, you ain't gonna have fun. Bahamians have a culture who's theme is "don't worry, be happy", and they live that to the fullest. That does not include rushing anything. I will NOT recommend the Reef Village all-inclusive deal to anyone, because it does stink, but I highly recommend Our Lucaya at Breaker's Cay or Lighthouse Point to anyone.

I also agree w/ Danny. I was there in the beginning of April and found this place to be wonderful. I did not eat at many of the restaurants (except Arowak which was horrible) at the resort, but was able to eat the Bahamian food across the street at the Lucaya Marketplace. If you eat a late lunch or early dinner you will have good service, as most travelers are out on the beach.
I believe Jean's exeperience of not receiving the cards to charge food and drinks to her room is unusual. I did not find the people at the main desk to be rude, but check in and check out is slow. We also got into a bit of an arguement with the desk as they charged me $2 to call a restaurant located in the resort. This was a trivial thing compared to the gorgeous grounds we walked on for three days.
I also recommend Our Lucaya. It should be even better once they finish everything (casino, additionaly restaurants). (Also, Iries was still not open).

Went to Our Lucaya as part of a package with Discovery Cruise lines. They put us at Reef Village, but we were not ALL INCLUSIVE. The resort is like Disney World! Our room was huge and lovely. Beautiful location and amenities, but I must say that the service was terrible. Check in and check out was a disaster and a brawl broke out during checkout......tempers were flaring! My step-son was celebrating his 16th and after waiting 45 minutes at Barracudas and not even seeing a hostess we went to Willy Broadleaf's (?) and again, nothing......we then went to China Beach and were told we would have a table in 20-30 minutes-we got a table an hour and 15 minutes later. I could go on, but in the end it took 3 hours to have dinner (they "lost" our order)and then they forgot his Birthday cake! All in all we decided to overlook the service problems and enjoy the property. That's my two cents.
