Check out Barbados. We just returned from there and there's plenty to do...

I'd highly recommend Antigua if your wife is into history. The island was Caribbean HQ of the British Navy back in the 1700s and has several old Bristish forts. Nelson's Dockyard is a national park and is well-restored. My husband is a history buff and he liked it.

Puerto Rico is also a good place for history. We had an 8-hour airport layover, so we went to El Morro and husband was very impressed. There is also good shopping in Old San Juan.

October, though, is a problem as Antigua is a prime hurricane spot. But you might be lucky and not get hit!

Seriously- why go to the Caribbean if you are not a beach person? That is the best part of the Caribbean. Go somewhere else for history, museums, etc.. The Caribbean is geared towards tourists interested in souvenirs and the beach. The economies of most Caribbean nations do not generate enough money to really keep up good museums, etc... In general, the Caribbean is poor- so they have to deal with their population's present problems before they can focus on luxuries like fancy museums. That being said- Puerto Rico would probably have the most and best preserved historical sights. I am not knocking the Caribbean- I love it. It is a place to be involved with a different culture and way of life- it is just not a place that has lots of museums, etc...

Hey mrchipry -

Why not try Bermuda....it is technically part of the caribbean, but in October the weather is still good.

They have forts there as well as alot of other history and museums, shopping, etc. Checkout the Bermuda tourism in google. There is a ton of stuff there to do besides water activity.

YOu can rent mopeds, etc.

Again, October is an iffy time in the carribean, but the weather is supposed to still be warm in Bermuda, and the prices somewhat reduced.

Let us know what you decide upon.

I agree with the above poster on Antigua. We honeymooned there last year. We were there the first week of October (3rd-10th) and we had nothing but sunshine the entire time! It rained the last night we were there, and that was it. Great island with lots of history.
