Novice scuba divers in Cayman

My husband and I are leaving for Grand Cayman
on the 29th and are wondering if it's possible to do a resort dive on Grand Cayman
as neither one of us have scuba dived before.

I did a resort course at Parrot's Landing. It was set up through the cruise ship, but I'm sure you could arrange something.

The Marriott, Westin and Hyatt have an on-site dive operation - Red Sail Sports. They offer a resort course about every morning in their pool and then you go out diving from the dive boat in the afternoon. My husband is certified and has gone with them every time we have been to Grand Cayman. He really thinks that they are great. There are a lot of other dive operations on the island, so check with your hotel. Most of the operations will pick you up at your hotel or condo, but I'm not sure about the resort courses. I'm sure you will love Grand Cayman!! Also, the snorkelling is great too! I would be happy to try to answer any other questions. Have a great trip.

Becky

My wife and I used Red Sail Sports at the Westin as novices. They were very friendly and professional. The only complaint I have is that knowing we were novices (only two dives in Bermuda before Grand Cayman) they took us to a poor and shallow (40 ft max) dive site not too far from the cemetary snorkel site. In a way I can't blame them, but DAMN! 40 ft? (and hardly any fish)...

To benefit the most from your trip, to ensure you are comfortable with the equipment, and for your own safety, I suggest you get certified BEFORE leaving. To make a buck, some dive operators will take you down after one or two hours in the pool (and that is NOT enough). Have fun.
Hi Marlo,
I agree with the previous post. I took my one and only dive a couple of years ago in Maui. We got our dive class on the boat on the way to the dive spot. I sure wish I had gotten certified before the dive. An open water dive as a begining dive is no way to feel comfortable with the equiptment and techniques of diving. It is a beautiful world under the water, I sure wish I would have been skilled enough to enjoy it rather then being scared to death because of my inexperience.

Did you dive and was it scary? I am clostrophobic and I wonder if it will make me panic. If you liked it, who did you use and what was the cost?
