My work friend and I (two single girls)are going on a work "incentive" trip and staying at the Four Seasons for 4 days only. We've been all over the Caribbean and have heard that Nevis is pretty sleepy.
Is there any night-life to be had? Will we be able to escape our fellow co-workers at all or is it pretty tiny?
Also, how is scuba diving and snorkeling?
If you have any restaurant recommendations, please let me know? Since we will have to do some "work" dinners, we will only have 2 nights to go out on or own, so if there are some great places, we'll do it since we don't have much free time?

Also, should we go on a "jeep trip" or a hike/rainforest tour? Is it worth it or should we just stay at Pinney beach and relax? Thanks a million for any suggestions!

To your specific questions...

Nightlife - yes, there is some, but not much. Basically at the hotels, or at Sunshine's beach bar which is just down the beach from the Four Seasons. Definitely the place to relax & meet people! But would imagine you'll have a hard time escaping your co-workers there because it is so close to the Four Seasons.

Snorkeling - We don't scuba, so can't speak to that, but from my limited snorkeling experience (and the comments of others) would say the snorkeling there is just OK. There are some stingrays off the shore from the Four Seasons, and you can do a 2-3 hour catamaran/snorkeling cruise from the Four Seasons that is wonderful.

Restaurants - Miss June's is supposed to be the most amazing Nevis dining experience, but we didn't get the chance to dine there. Miss June is a local lady who prepares 5-course meals with drinks at her home for 14 or so people each night...supposedly Oprah's favorite place to eat when she's there. If you want to do it, try to book far ahead, as she is often well-booked in advance. We also enjoyed eating at the Beach Bars, especially the Golden Rock beach bar for lunch & amazing rum punch (if you're facing the ocean, it's at the end of Pinney's beach to your left) and Sunshine's for dinner. We had a great meal at Nisbet Plantation - on Thursday evening they have a great seafood BBQ by the water. The chef at Oualie Beach Hotel's restaurant is also very good.

Things to do - definitely recommend taking a tour of the island. Don't know the "jeep trip" to which you refer, but some of the good taxi drivers will give you a 2-3hr tour of the island and tell you about the people & history - for $50-60/US total for the 2 of you. It's definitely worth it. It's a beautiful island, with some of the most amazing restored sugar plantation inns, most of which the driver will stop at for you to see.

Rainforest hiking - as part of your taxi tour, you will likely stop at Golden Rock (where we stayed) which has a 20-30 minute interpretive nature hike in the rainforest which is pretty good for a short hike. Your driver should wait for you while you do it. Beyond that, we didn't get much hiking in.

Hopefully, you will love Nevis as much as we did! It is a bit sleepy, but it is by no means boring, and anyway, a little rum punch goes a long way!

It's a very comprehensive web-site that will tell you just about everything you need to know about Nevis. You'll find unbiased reviews of just about every restaurant on the island, listings for all activities, tours, rain forest hikes, beaches, watersports, etc.

I was hoping to take a snorkeling trip ove rto St Kitts with Barbara Whitman when we were there in April, but left it to the end of our trip and she came down with a bad case of laryngitis.....My understanding is that there's no decent snorkeling on Nevis itself (we tried, at Nisbet and Herbert's beaches), but the area on St Kitts where she goes is supposed to be great. It's a 4-hr or so trip. You can find her at Oualie Beach, and her number is listed on the Nevis Journeys map.

From the beach at Four Seasons you can walk a pretty good distance in either direction and get away from fellow sun-bathers. I 2nd the recommendations for lunch at Sunshine's and Golden Rock Beach Pavilion. In town, Cafe des Arts serves really great breakfasts and I suspect their lunches are good as well. They're right next to the Historical Museum, so you could visit after lunch and get some shade during the hottest part of the day.

Both Gallipot and Banana's have lively ex-pat clientele and the bar areas in both restaurants looked like a lot of fun when we were there. Food at both places is very good. Gallipot serves excellent fresh grilled fish, steak frites and daily specials, for a pretty reasonable price. Banana's serves more fusion style food and is a bit more upscale. Both places are about a 10 minute ride from Four Seasons.

For a splurge meal, I'd try one of the plantation inns. Hermitage is supposed to have the best restaurant but it was fully booked with a group the night we wanted to go. Old Manor was lovely and the food was delicious. There's a seafood barbecue, with live music, at Nisbet Plantation on Thursday nights that always gets good reviews.

In your rented car, drive down the beautiful driveway of 4 S's, and turn right on the main highway, heading south. Stay on the highway through Charlestown, past St. John's Anglican church on left, past Hermitage Plantation Inn on left, and about 2 or 3 miles you'll come to entrance on left to Golden Rock Plantation Inn. Drive up on the gravel road and park in the Golden Rock Inn car port. Eat lunch on their patio, amidst tropical wild birds and Pam's (proprietor) parrot will no doubt come to visit you too, whilst you dine in the open air. Then, after talking to Pam and learning virtually everything to do on the island, walk about 50 feet to the nature trail, and take a short, one-mile walk through the tropical forest. If you walk quietly, and slow, you will notice the troop of wild vervet monkeys eyeballing you. If you are patient, and sit down on a stump along the trail, they will come and visit you in the tree canopy overhead. Worth seeing. Robert
