Nevis thoughts
My husband and I are considering a visit to Nevis next spring. We'd love to hear from anyone who has been there. We prefer quiet,
authentic, vacations. We like to do so easily snorkling, try new things and mix with the "locals". Is Nevis a spot for this?
For comparison.....we've been to St. John, Virgin Gorda, Jamaica, St. Martin and several out islands in the Bahamas. Thank you for your comments
We were in Nevis last summer, and stayed at the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club. A wonderful hotel, great atmosphere, service, great 5-course dinner at night, exceptionally friendly employees. As to mixing with the locals: one of the employees invited us, and one other couple, to her daughter's graduation party! A great experience for us! Nisbet is certainly very quiet, right on a very quiet beach. The only (slightly) negative thing I could say is that it may be a bit windy there sometimes, with some sand blowing. I wouldn't know about snorkeling, we've never tried it. Maybe someone else can tell you.
We took several tours around the island with a hired "taxi" arranged through the hotel with a fixed price. Very interesting (though slightly bumpy) ride. All in all, I warmly recommend Nevis and the Nisbet Plantation. (I wouldn't recommend the Four Seasons, though lots of Americans seem to love it - it seems like such a standardized place to me, Nisbet Plantation is almost equally luxurious and far more authentic.) Hope this helps.

Amy, Nevis is a wonderful place to visit. We stayed at Hermitage Plantation Inn, on the slopes of Mt Nevis. While the beach is a 20 minute drive away, the hotel arranges transport and can arrange snorkling. You can see a detailed review of the Plantation at www.i-escape.com, with lots of photos.

My husband & I have been to Nevis three times. Stayed at the Four Seasons each time. After our first stay, my husband declared it "the best vacation he ever had", and he is usually quite fussy about such things. We love the Four Seasons. Beautiful rooms, terrific service (vs horrible experience at Cap Juluca, Anguilla) Relaxing beach. Snorkling off the beach at Four Seasons will be a disappointment. We would drive to other beaches on the island for that. Be sure to drive around the whole island to visit plantation ruins etc..
We went to Nisbet for lunch, and found the beach to be much too windy and rough for our taste. Four Seasons nice and calm.

Enjoy whatever you do!!

Elizabeth;

Thank you ever-so-much as well for your reply. Though I'm torn between the "old Caribbean" charm of somewhere like Nisbet vs the beauty and service at Four Seasons, I'm presently leaning towards the FS. My husband prefers a quieter surf and not so windy. I'm sure the Nisbet certainly has it's stronger points as well.

Regarding FS......do you have any strong feelings regarding 1st or 2nd floor accomodations? We dont mind the stairs and since the patios are screened up there, I thought it might be more private yet still ad living space? Any further comments would be appreciated.

Thanks again!
Amy

I stayed on the first floor oceanfront at FS and it was nice to be able to walk right out to the beach. However, I understand your concern about privacy because there were people walking on the beach and on the hammock right in front of my room at night. 2nd floor would definitely give the privacy and let you keep the windows uncovered to enjoy the view. Also, very amusing, we were awoken each night by scratching on our glass patio door. Not good news for some of my associates who were in their rooms by themselves. Turned out to be crabs who are buried in the sand by day and come out at night! You'll love the pampering you'll get on the beach at FS. There is really nothing much to do on the island and very little shopping on St. Kitts. Have a killer bee at the Sunshine bar at the end of the beach for low key company.
