Need help in the Caribbean?

My wife and I have our first chance to take
a trip WITHOUT kids in 10 years. We want to go somewhere warm with clear water and good food, shopping & nitelife. We first thought about St. Maarten, but have heard mixed reviews. Can anyone make a suggestion. To summarize; we loved the water/climate of Grand Cayman and the pace of Cozumel; we prefer a deluxe hotel.
Jeff - I have found Barbados to be the gem of the Caribbean. The people are very friendly, the climate nearly perfect, the water outrageous and the resorts the perfect size. You definitely sound like you'd like the west coast of the island. Take a look at Glitter Bay, Royal Pavillion, Tamarind Cove, Cobblers Cove, Colony Club, Treasure Beach, Discovery Bay to start - these are some of the nicest west coast hotels. Try www.barbados.org or www.funbarbados.com to look these and other places up. E-mail me if you have any additional questions. Of the 13 Caribbean islands I've been to Barbados is by far my favorite. Been back 17 times so far, and know there are plenty more to come.
Jeff-
Think about Aruba. Unlike most of the Caribbean, it's a desert climate. Also unlike most of the region, it has some of the most reliable weather (about 85 degrees year round) and is totally bug free. The resort area--Palm and Eagle beaches is wonderfully clean and the water is gorgeous. The diving and snorkeling is a lot of fun too. You can do a half day jeep trip of the island (escorted) that shows you everything. There are caves to explore and Atlantis submarine that gives you a unique view of a sunken ship and airplane. Aruba is just 15 miles from Venezuela and you can (if you have a passport) jump to Venezuela for the day if you like.

We found the people to be very pleasant whether in the local grocery stores, shopping or just at your resort.

They have a wide range of dining options on the island too or you could choose an all-inclusive if you prefer.

My wife, daughter and I are returning to Aruba for spring break this year. We had such a great time last year.

Good luck planning your "escape" wherever you go!!

Not sure what you heard about St. Martin, but I got engaged there 3-1/2 years ago (we're married now) and absolutely loved it. If money is not a problem stay at La Samanna. Very very plush. We stayed at Le Meridiene - La Domaine which is set in a private cove...very romantic. The water is great, the food was excellent and the shopping is fabulous. Shop on the dutch side but stay on the french side. Enjoy!
