Maybe it's the month. We usually go in March, but have been to St. John in June and August with no mosquitos.

My wife and I are vacationing on St. John, USVI, for the month of February, 2013. This is our first visit to this lovely island. We are staying in a cozy villa, on the East End, near Haulover Bay. The villa is high on the hill with gorgeous views.
However, there’s a MAJOR mosquito problem on the island 24/7. We must spray ourselves heavily with Off (DEET) every few hours. Even then, these mighty warriors, attack you with vengeance. We have mosquito bites all over our bodies. We wear long pants and long sleeve shirts to deter the critters, and this tactic usually works, but uncomfortable in warm weather. Then they swarm around your head and bare feet. There are more mosquitoes in the house, then in the pool area. This is a huge deterrent for vacationing on St. John. We also notice the mosquitoes problem while traveling elsewhere on this small tropical island.
At night one must stay fully under the sheets, or be eaten alive. Our villa doesn’t have mosquito nets, but should.
I would NOT visit St. John again, due to this annoying problem.

Corvette,

I spent 10 days on St John, visited at least a dozen different beaches, drove all over the island, was outside every single night, and never had one bite. I always bring bug spray on every vacation due to the reports of horrible mosquitos....and have yet to ever use it.

To the original poster, good luck finding a bug free island...it simply doesn't exist. If you truly want 100% bug free zone, I'm afraid you'll be sitting inside most of the time. Other than that, bring bug dope...and put it on. This is not rocket science!! LOL

The sad truth is that some peo are just more susceptible than others. My friend & I were in Roatan in August, & we had been warned about sand fleas. We used insect repellant every day, & we both got a couple of little bites but nothing that we really even noticed.

However, several other peo on the same beach were bitten all over.

So -- it's the luck of the draw.

Also, many of the resorts do comb the beach & apparently use bug lights, etc. to discourage those pests.

I've been to St John several times and I have experienced mosquitoes and I have vacationed there where I did not see one. St John is mostly a national park and after heavy rains, there is a mosquito bloom that lasts a couple of weeks. We just make sure our villa has a/c and can be closed up at night. We take citronella and repellent with DEET. St John is much too beautiful to stay away because of bugs...

We travel to Puerto Rico often and haven't encountered many mosquitos. Although there were enough that I put screens up in our cabana. Even one bite is uncomfortable.

Try an island that has a good wind onto it - ie the north of Grenada has got a good breeze.

If you're more susceptible to bug bites, you probably know what kind of bug spray works best for you. Make sure you use the bug spray each and every time you go outside. Reapply it a few times during the day when lying in the sun or swimming. If you're vigilant with its use, your odds of not getting bitten are better.

I tend to get bitten more outside at dusk and during the night in our room, but that's just me. We brought a battery operated Off device with us that had small discs that you refill. We used it in our room at night when we were sleeping on our last vacation and it helped.
