Mango Bay Resort, Virgin Gorda Report

We just returned from a lovely week at Mango Bay Resort on Virgin Gorda. We had their "just for two" package that included a jeep for a week, in room massages for both of us and dinner at a lovely restaurant. When we arrived a bottle of wine was waiting in the fridge for us as a welcome gift.

Mango Bay Resort is centrally located and close to town. We liked the location. We got one of the one-bedroom beachfront villas and loved being able to step off our patio right onto the beach. The villas are a little worn, but still in good shape overall. The internet was included and worked pretty well most days - some better than others and I think that is an island issue, not an issue with the resort. Loved the beach toys included - kayaks, floats, snorkel gear. Very important for us was a large covered porch with comfortable chairs to sit and read in the shade. There was a nice tv with a multitude of channels, but we only turned it on once during the week.

Our complimentary dinner was at The Rock - one of the better restaurants on the island. If you go early and aren't there for the music, ask to sit in the rocks out back.

We also enjoyed "Hog Heaven" - a simple restaurant with a view extrodinaire. Simple food done well - excellent barbque. Because the lighting is poor, I would go for lunch or an early dinner so you can see what you are eating.

Not the most luxurious resort - but then again it's nowhere near the price of LIttle Dix or Bitter end either. Daily maid service was included. The onsite manager (Geno) was very helpful and very friendly. The location, view and quick access to water has put it on our "return to" list. A very good value and beautiful setting.

Thanks for the report! I visited the property a few years ago and was impressed - have recommended it a few times on this board. Happy to see an honest report from someone who stayed there. Wish I could go back to VG right now on this rainy Boston day.

I love that area of Virgin Gorda and I wish more people would go there so I could read about their experiences when I'm stuck at home! We stayed next door at one of the Mahoe Bay villas on a splurge-y vacation and would return to the Mango Bay units in a heartbeat. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Do you think it is a good place to stay for a couple planning to elope and honeymoon? We've looked at Mango Bay and were concerned it might be a bit run down to the point that it would distract. What are you thoughts on that? I am so in love with the idea of staying right on the beach, but the rest of it needs to be good too. I don't need 5-star, but if it isn't luxurious, it needs to be charming, clean and comfortable since it is a romantic trip for us.

I am curious too as to how tired it is. Location can't be beat but I can't tell if it's just older but well maintained or if it's actually run down. Consdering Mango Bay for our vacation next year. Also, can you comment on the difference between the one bedroom beachfront suite and the beachfront studio? I know the studio only has a partial ocean view and I assume it is smaller? I was told both units could accomodate us and our 7 year old. Thanks!

Kristen,
I am curious to hear the answers so I am bumping you up; however, we stayed there 2 years ago and loved it. At that time, the grounds were very well maintained and the interiors were very clean and well kept. Would I replace what is there with prettier bedspreads and linens if I owned it? Yes, but that is not a big deal to me when you are in a place so wonderfully situated on a calm and beautiful bay with very few other people sharing it. The kayaks and the floats, plus all the beach chairs were a plus.
There were only the two of us so the oceanview #6 was just right for us but you would need more room for children. The oceanfront was already booked when I booked our vacation months in advance so we could not get it.
I hope that MB has not gotten run down or "tired" - it was a great spot and we would return some day.
I loved your SJ report- thanks for posting!

Thanks Ish! How much of the ocean could you actually see from the oceanview?

I don't think there was really much of a view from the living area if you were seated there- there was a view from the porch chairs but we spent so little waking time inside since the beach was right there and we did a lot of exploring by car most days as well. There was only a sidewalk and shrubbery/flowers between the unit and the water, no buildings in the line of sight.
The lounge chairs, hammocks and tables/chairs on the beach were within a few feet of the water so if we were "at home" we were usually out there (and had it completely to ourselves most days)- gorgeous sunsets from right there, too.
The oceanfront units truly were ocean front and close to the water on either side of the "community" seating, beach, kayak/float racks, etc.

Kristen,
if you use TA, go to the reviews of MB- mine is on page 5 (I think it said just now) and is dated April 21, 2010 entitled "a little slice of heaven with a hammock"- if you look at the pictures I posted, one is from the windows or porch of unit 6. if you do use TA, send me a PM and I could send you more pix if you want.
