(i)i can't understand why the owner would not be looking for her.(/i)
virginia,
I live in Jamaica and recently lost my cat while on a trip to the vet. The carrier wasn't closed properly (unknown to me) and she just bolted. I went back to the spot every day for about two weeks and to this day I haven't seen ear or tail of her!
I'm sure she did not stay in that area...but I had no idea which direction she headed once she got out of the carrier. She had no collar or tag on her because the day before she had (again!) Houdinied herself out of her collar and had lost it. She's usually a very friendly cat and if someone found her they'd instantly know she was someone's cat.
To assume that her owners are not looking for her is wrong. Maybe they have posted pictures and have frantically been searching for her where they think she may have disappeared...maybe unknown to them she's miles away from where she disappeared.
I'm just glad someone found the dog and it looks like she will eventually get a new home. I wish I had the comfort of knowing what became of my cat, Tessa.

Although most people would be out searching for their lost pet, some vacationers do abandon them! It is horrid, but true. We spent the winter in Vieques. There was this little dog, all matted and full of burrs, that walked down the road every day (it's funny these island dogs have their own society and get together in the road several times a day!)
We pet her a few times and when my husband went to give her a bite of food, I said no, we do not want to encourage her...within a few more days, she was so sweet, I gave her a piece of cheese...she never left our house!
We found out that she had been with this American family who left her, some neighbor "looked out" for her but did not care whether or not she was around.
So to make a long story short, Nina is now making her home in Maine with us and our other pets. She is sooo lovable that it makes me sad and upset when I think how she must have felt when abandoned!
I mentioned this to a friend of ours who lives at the beach and he said summer people do it all the time here in Maine!!
I hope that little dog will find her family as she obviously misses them.

cmcfong,
It broke my heart terribly...but it's been about a month or more since she got away...I held out hope at first that I'd find her. But now I just hope someone found her and is feeding her and looking after her.
She was such a spoilt, touchy feely cat too!!
Everytime I drive past there I kind of look out to see if I can catch a glimpse of her. Everytime I see a grey striped cat I wonder if it's her.
I read somewhere that once they're out in the "wild" for a while their "wild" instincts set in and they might not even remember their owner. Wonder if that's really true...hmmmm...

JAGIRL,
I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. I cannot imagine that happening to one of my pets. You have to hope she is being cared for.
My "inn" is full or I'd take that sweet dog without a home in an instant. I'm checking back on the Abaco board to see if anyone has claimed her. Someone thinks they recognize the dog and was with someone last week at an Abaco resort. Let's hope this lost dog has a happy ending.

Well..... At least she's someplace really warm. It's indeed a sad story , and I'm an animal lover myself. I have pets of my own, pets growing up, they sleep in my bed etc. etc. Still.... in situations like this we always need to think of people in misery, and a private plane to get a pup could perhaps be put to better use. Sorry. Donning my flame suit as I write.

jeez you people are all into picking on me. i was not disparaging the dogs owners - but rather thinking they must be searching just not in the correct location. AND not suggesting a plane be dedicated to this purpose but hopeing someone going there anyway on vacation, might be willing to help get the dog to the states IF that becomes necessary.

No pickin' on you here. I agree, if someone was already going that would be a very generous gesture to bring her back to a welcoming family. And besides, I'm sure I could find something fun to do on this trip to Abaco to pick up a dog. I'm thinking a few days in the sun, with the new dog of course, would be in order! Here's hoping....

I feel so bad for the dog. I hope he finds a new owner to take him in. He's adorable.
Some pets are better off with new owners. One time my husband brought home a dog that he found a few blocks away, and the next day, we asked people who were outside if the dog was familiar. We ended up finding the house, and the owner did not even react, and was just like "oh okay thanks". Not to mention there were cigarette butts on the floor and children in the house. If someone brought back my dog, I would be jumping up and down out of exitement! So I regretted bringing the dog back to them.

Just because some of us wanted to know the ending to this story.....this was taken from the Abaco board by the foster family:
" I want to thank everyone for their public and private responses and leads. Our Mystery Girl has just been adopted by Kitty and Dave Donnan of Elbow Cay!!!
They came over this morning to meet her and fell in love. We took her downtown shopping where she picked out a green harness and matching leash that the Donnans purchased for her along with dogfood, bowls, a brush and shampoo. She strutted out to the 2:00 ferry. I helped her get in a crate for the ride and said goodbye.
I had not been able to update since our internet went down to let everyone know that after putting up posters we were given information and leads that her former owners sold their home and left her behind. She was befriended by some workers but they had to travel back and forth to Florida.
There are many things about her past we do not know including her name but she has gone to a great home where she will be loved and cared for and called by the name Windy. "
a good ending.
