Los ríos de Cuba/ Rivers of Cuba

World Rivers Day, is celebrated every last Sunday in September and I am a river buff. Sure, most go to Cuba for it's beaches rather than it's rivers although rivers can provide wildlife, heat relief, bridges, transportation and hopefully clean water.

The Rivers of Cuba

I remember many folks in Bayamo hanging out by the Bayamo river, cooling off on a sunny day. The Almendares River runs between the Vedado and Miramar neighborhoods in Havana.

I celebrate World rivers day because of my involvement in fish and wildlife across Canada. Also with all the canoeing done at my camp in northern Ontario where I was elected councillor many years in a row. I can’t remember where exactly but somewhere between Santiago, Bayamo and Holguin, our taxi driver pointed out Cuba’s largest river to us.

Oje! CubanWaters! Good to see you on here too. We've done the campismo thing a few times just north of Camaguey city where we camped out near a river in that countryside and rode down it lazy-river style on inner tubes. Lot's of Cubans there doing the same thing to beat the heat too. The water was warm and fresh. Good times! There's no way that we could have done that in the main river running through the city of Camaguey - much too polluted. Heck! The little river that runs just down the street from our casa in Cam is jet black in color. Nothing can live in that damned muck. Terry

The only Cuban city that I can recall off of the top of me head (other than Havana) that had a river going through it was Santa Clara. Looking on a map, there seems to be more than one leg of that river running through town. I have been to Santa Clara twice. Last year and 18 years before that. I remember walking over that river(s) many years ago and walked over a couple of bridges last year too. That river(s) obviously have the purpose of carrying the cities sewage away. Well it sure was shtanky! Believe you me.

I remember having a nice little hike through Parque Almendares in Havana a few years back and taking photos of the Rio Almendares river that ran through it. I should go through me photos for memory sake.
