Yes, very good news from Jamaica! Now let's hope that the Cayman's and Cuba fare as well.

I just read this on stormcarib.com

Subject: RE: Ivan jamaica

Somehow we survived and lived through a night of extreme terror.

We went through a day and night of unimaginable fury of nature, words
fail me to describe the experience.
The sounds were as if a jumbo jet takes of and passes 10 m above your
roof.
Because of the slowing forward moving of Ivan we were pounded at 150
miles p.h. for many, many hours more than predicted last night.

Damage is unbelievable.

Shelters are filled with thousands of people, they are running out of
food and the radio stations appeal to citizens as soon as the storm has
passed to donate food to the shelters.
That will not be before this evening.

Somehow phone lines and internet systems have held up.

"Big up" C&W of Jamaica and Digicel.
They can certainly advertise their equipment as hurricane safe.

Right now we don't know if there were casualties as the entire island is
inundated, all roads are blocked, bridges have come down, big areas are
flooded and mud slides are covering large areas.

Some shelters could not stand up to the winds and people had to be
relocated in the height of the storm.
How that was done I don't know as you cannot walk in 150 miles of storm.

Hospitals were damaged and patients had to be relocated in Mobay
Cornwall and Kingston KPH and Jubilee.

The Prime Minister declared Jamaica a national disaster and implemented
a Public Emergency, restricting freedom of movement and assembly.
This is done to protect the citizens from looting.
We are thankful for that as we feel a lot safer this way.

Looting is going on right now but the police is very, very vigilant and
adopts a no nonsense approach, we are thankful for that.

In the height of the storm several heavily armed gangs of criminals were
engaging the security forces in gun battles in Kingston, endangering the
security forces' lives.

The security forces along with the Government agencies did a magnificent
job.

Some areas are simply flattened, the Community of Windsor has not one
roof left, including the church which served as a shelter, people have
nowhere to go and the winds and rain are pounding on.
Almantown in Kingston is flat.

The roads all over the island are inundated, bridges destroyed.
Communities cannot be reached.
Banana plantations are flat, for that matter our "food basket" in
general is destroyed.

Our hearts go out to Cayman and Florida.

Please consider Ivan as the most dangerous storm you can imagine.
Double check your preparations, you will need it.
One word of advice: when people start to feel the terror and fear for
their lives as we have last night, psychology comes into play.
Hold the children tight as they may be scared beyond belief.
Also tempers can flare out of fear, prayers helped us to cope and stay
half way calm and stay together as a group.

By tomorrow we will know more about the damage but I fear it will
resemble Grenada.

We have a friend flying in tomorrow to check South Coast but for now, reports very sketchy. Land and cell lines are still down/but Aman Parchment in Billy's Bay/Treasure Beach got through by recharging his cell from his car battery. Hard rains, trees/powerlines down,2 ft standing water in some places, roads mashed up.
Jamaica puts power grid back on today but some areas won't get power for 3 weeks. Port Antonio largely spared/some tin roofs off -- and many more in Mandeville. It's going to take some time before we know what is really happening on the ground. There are currently LOTS of relief organizations
getting ready to send in docs and supplies. Please see www.treasurebeach.net or www.jamaicans.com
I'll let you know when Carolyn comes thru/

Liz:Frenchman's and Calabash seem to have gotten the worst of it. Roofs or parts of roofs off Coquina in Great Bay,
Rainbow Point, much of Jake's, Rebecca's house. Unforgettable, La Casa Duna, Buccaneer, Mar Blue held strong. No reports in yet on Arcadia or Blue Marlin and Driftwood. In Bluefields Bay/Belmont, Horizon held strong with only the replaceable thatch house at jetty's end gone. Trees down.Roads mashed up/communication lines just started to come back this morning.

I have tried unsuccessfully to contact friends/business associates on the south coast. I have several emails out right now. Their company website has not been available so still waiting for word from them in Kingston, Old Harbour and May Pen. Anyone else heard from people in these towns?

Tiv, do you yet have a sense of the condition of Treasure Beach in general, if water and power are likely to be back in the next couple of weeks, if the roads in are passable?

If any 2 villas at SW still stand, we intend to go, if there will be water and power and we can get there. I have heard it was one of the original, waterside villas that was severely damaged, I am hearing the two up the hill are OK. If they weren't booked and are habitable, that's what we'll do.

Rebecca is our booking agent and she is still not reachable by phone or e-mail so we are a bit in the dark as to whether we have a place or not. Axel and A gave me the cell number for Preacher but frankly I hate to bother him with my relatively petty concerns about where we'll stay, I imagine he is dealing with far more serious matters right now.

Later we may try to reach the owner of SW but she is in Kingston - pregnant - and may not know much either.

Have seen some terrible images again about the state of some towns in Jamaica , people without water for the third day ... Not a house to sleep in no clothes to change into , they appeared poverty stricken before and what little they had was taken away . Tiv. , any ideas for helping ? Faith

Don't know about Moondance in particular but I'm hearing the beach overall didn't get it too bad.

More info:

www.jamaicans.com - see General Discussion and Jamaicaholics, they have the most info

Liz/call me for latest updates. Power/water not back on for AT LEAST a week. Roads all passable. Esau flies in from Boston tomorrow am to Horizon for a week so will have better idea once he in place on progress. Think you might find the story the same in Negril. Preacher who works as chef at Mar Blue also manages/oversees SW so I'd keep trying him first/and also via Rhema at MB for status.
